Birdseye Imagery

@AJR talked me into getting a Birdseye subscription, and so far I'm really enjoying it. The 280x280 resolution and, especially, the 8-bit color limitations certainly are noticeable, but the imagery has still proven to be pretty useful for me.

Since I wasn't able to find much online about how the imagery actually works on these watches, (and Garmin doesn't even *officially* recognize that Birdseye Imagery is supposed to work on their watches), I figured I'd post some screenshots for others to see what they can expect if they decide to give it a try.

Here's a walk I did near a city park (120ft map scale):

Here's a more rural Hike I did along a river (200ft map scale):

And just for fun, here's a photo of how the imagery on the watch looks in real life. This is Disneyland (50ft map scale):

Overall, I'd say it was a bargain of an upgrade for $29. And I'm impressed with how well the Fenix handles it, even though it really wasn't designed for it. Map still works great, it takes a little longer to zoom in and out but it doesn't seem to bog down the processor too badly, and I haven't noticed it affecting battery life at all. Is it as good as Google satellite imagery? No. But it's offline satellite imagery on a sports watch! And that's pretty neat I think Slight smile

I've loaded highest-resolution imagery of all the areas I normally hike in (a significant portion if the Sierra Nevadas and foothills), and it's only taking up about 4GB on the watch.

The process to make it all work is pretty simple. Just connect your watch to PC, open Basecamp and let it pull all the maps from your watch (can take an hour or more, maps are huge files), then buy a Birdseye subscription and make sure Basecamp is connected to your Garmin account. Open the Birdseye menu, highlight the area you want to download (it limits you to 75mb per download, or sometimes it lets you download up to 230mb per download), give it a name, check the option to sync it to the watch, and wait for it to download. Repeat for additional areas. Now in your activity's map settings, there will be an option to toggle Birdseye on or off. It seems to play nicely with the factory maps and my TalkyToaster and OSM maps, and automatically overlays all the map data on top of the imagery. I expected it to be a lot more complicated than that, but it really is pretty simple.

  • Those flipping roadworks on the heads of the valley lol... They slowed me down for two years on my motorbike going to the Abergavenny cafe... Rofl (I live in Wyllie Blackwood)

Yes my Birds eye imagery is also current in my village... I've got most of south wales, some of England and landmarks around the world... downloaded.... many gigs lol...took many hours, I think it adds an extra dimension to Navigation at times, and enjoy it on my watch, and I like to have the imagery covering where ever I travel to.

Airplane! Lol.... we have a ufo in Wyllie.. (actually a reflection of a shed roof.. Ha!)

Great to speak to you again.. all the best Thumbsup

  • For the mountain tops it's great as you see extra sheep trails etc!

Yeah, I'm wondering if they'll ever finish the HOTV. They closed a wonderful disabled-friendly path from Brynmawr through Gellifelen, still waiting for them to reopen it!

  • You are talking about Birds eye imagery on Fenix 6 pro?

  • How to install birdseye on Fenix 6x pro, Garmin canceled support of birdseye for 6x in Basecamp?

  • It worked fine for me on BC for the PC - but I haven't updated the imagery for a while. It's also tied tot he watch, so asI've upgraded my 6 to a 6X I'd need to re-subscribe I'd ask Sam in this thread as I know he is an active user

  • Garmin officially stopped support because when they upgraded their imagery, it didn't look to great on the watch screens anymore with smaller objects like houses etc.... But I find it depends on one's location, as to quality, I download 5gigs of bird's-eye this year on my 6x...when I had to have my watch replaced the first time, I just transferred the imagery over after registration swap over...... But!..... Sometimes it works well... other times I have to download it all again as the imagery is tied to one device, but if your watch is replaced for some reason, the imagery can be transferred ... but if you just buy another, it cannot be swapped over. Yes it will work in basecamp perfectly, just buy the imagery, and load up basecamp...

    : -)

  • when I had to have my watch replaced the first time, I just transferred the imagery over after registration swap ove

Was that difficult to do Sam? My subscription has about 3 months left

  • Yes lol....

I've had seven Fenix 5xs...two Fenix 5x plus... And four Fenix 6x Sapphires BLK DLC....all replacements... (I tested programs for some devs)

Sometimes it's a case of just putting your email address in the box in basecamp when prompted to transfer the images to a "replacement device"...sometimes I have to ring product support to do it there end.... sometimes they have no idea what I'm saying..... or your can input your user name.... Sometimes this will work perfectly saving me days of downloading again.... (with a new watch, not replacement you cannot transfer bird's-eye and a new subscription is needed.)...

If yours is running out you will still be able to see and forever use with your images with that particular watch even after subscription ends. .... I usually load as much as I can before it ends to get my moneys worth lol...
