Accumulated altitude suddenly overshooting by 40%

Hi,

I use my Fenix for tracking my MTB routes. Usually I check the accumulated height gain and for the same track (I have my standard routes which I repeat regularly) there is a difference of maybe 5..6% max.

Now since a couple of weeks I noticed that its suddenly overshooting by 30..40% for the very same routes.

If I check the altitude profile e.g. in Basecamp I see that the reason obvoisely are some artifacts (sudden drop of height) which you can see below, especially in the uphill sections.

FW is 15.20. Yesterday I updated to the latest beta but without any improvement.Unfortunately I can´t say or remember if the issue existed with older FW´s.

I also disabled the auto altitude calibration on the watch but without any effect neither,

Anybody else noticed something similar? Or any ideas othert than broken HW?

  • There are several different auto-calibration settings. Perhaps you only turned off the not-during-activity auto-calibration, but left the during-activity continuous calibration turned on?

    1. Long-press Menu (up) button
    2. Sensors and Accessories
    3. Altimeter
    4. Auto Cal.
    5. During Activity
    6. "At start" or "Off".
  • Thank you, but I indeed turned both options off:

    During activity = off
    Not during activity = off

Btw, would you know the difference between the two options? The manual only describes the first one.
Given their names it sounds like one of them would be too much.

  • Calibrate not during activity is a one time daily calibration.  You must be connected to your cell phone and the watch will use the GPS location your phone provides and then takes that location and calibrates altitude from DEM.  This happens during your set sleep window only.  It works great unless you live on the 20th floor of a high rise apartment building because you're calibrated to ground level.
