Garmin Fenix 6X Sapphire on a WiFi update loop

Hello there,

My Garmin Fenix 6X Sapphire is stuck in a WiFi update loop.

The watch states there is an update for the WiFi on the watch but when I run the update nothing appears to change.

I disabled auto-update on the watch but still the watch auto-updates every night by itself.

Also when I charge the watch it states there is an update when i disconnect the cable.

So every morning I am greated with the message that Wifi has been updated.

This updating at night also corrupts my sleep logging.

The watch is on software version 15.20, updated last week through Garmin Express for Mac.

The WiFi is on version 655.35 when I check on the watch.

Is this a known problem and doest somebody have a fix?

  • Hi there, Did you get any joy with this problem, as i have the exact same thing and its really bothering me now, I've tried all sorts to stop it, but every morning I'm greeted with the same message about wifi updated, which interrupts my sleep details

  • Hi there, I filed a warranty claim but Garmin Support told me they are keen on fixing it because they see it as a software issue.

They asked for two weeks trying to fix it, iff that doesn't work then they will replace my watch under warranty.

The issue was quite irritating to me to because it messes up a number of measurements and stats.

Also every time you had the watch hooked to the computer or charger it would prompt that there is an update.

You cancel it by holding the back/lap button but still...

  • The WiFi is on version 655.35 when I check on the watch.

65535 really stands out to me - that's that max number you can fit into 16-bits, probably upper and lower version numbers are both 255, assuming 8 bytes for each number.

  • I've been googling about this issue for ages and got no joy until i saw your post this morning, I've had a number of garmin watches, fenix 3, 3hr, 5 and now the 6x, and this is the only one I've had any issues with, my wifi and software version are the same as yours as well....did you email or ring garmin about this, because I'm going to do the same....

my watch says that wifi updated every night at approx 1am in the morning, which means my sleep doesn't record until after 1am, after the update

  • Today I received a suggestion from Garmin Support:

Try removing any existing update files on the device and reinstall using  computer:

    1. Connect to computer and open Garmin folder
    2. In the Garmin folder Delete the Remote SW folder and the gupdate.gcd file (If on a mac make sure the empty recycling bin)
    3. Then update software with Garmin Express and disconnect and test.

For connecting to the folder on the watch I needed to install Android File Transfer because I'm on a Mac.

For me this suggestion looks like it works out OK.

  • Have you checked System, Software Update, to see if there is/was an update there waiting to be installed?

  • There was a software update available when I looked under system --> software update, but when I would install it the version of the software on the watch shown under system --> about stayed the same and there would still be a software update available under system --> softeware update on the watch

  • hi did this sort out the problem with your watch, as I'm still having problems

    Wayne

  • Removing the RemoteSW folder from my watch through the computer solved the update loop.

But as soon as I connect my watch to Garmin Express the loop starts again, so it isn’t a permanent solution.

I hope Garmin fixes the issue soon!

  • thanks for that info, i can find the folder "remotest" and I've deleted it but i can't find update.gcd anywhere....im also using mac so had to install android file transfer...are garmin looking into your situation, as I've spoke to several people at garmin but still having issues
