Show Course on Map

Hi Garmin

I was browsing this forum with no luck of seeing an official answer to this question:
Why can't we get the "show course/track" on map feature? Like on the edge 530? I don't want navigation and i don't want to follow the track exactly, just see it on the map during my activity (Hike / Running / Biking) to see that I more or less follow the right directions.

Can you PLEASE add "show on map" feature? Or at least explain why this is possible on a old edge 520 but not on my new Fenix 6S Sapphire?

Can't imagine that I'm the only one still missing this feature...

Cheers

  • Put the feature request here also: https://www.garmin.com/en-US/forms/ideas/

In this forum you will only get fellow user comment and there are many that think like you.

  • If you use course navigation the track will be on the map. You don't have to follow it. You'll see "off course"  notification once but you can ignore it.

Why doesn't that work for you?

  • I would like this feature, too. It's not very often that I would use it, but there are some times when it would be really handy.

For example, there's a park in my area with a system of a whole bunch of interconnecting trails - I never follow all the trails in the same way, so course navigation wouldn't work right. But without navigating a course, I have no way to see the the trails on the map. So my choices are: have my watch constantly tell me that I'm off course, or not have the trails shown on my map.

Another good example is a day at a theme park - maybe you want to load all the paths at the theme park onto your watch so you can more easily navigate the park, but you don't want to get frequent off-course reminders all day.

  • One reason is that course navigation uses more system resources and battery, so if you don't need to navigate the course, then it is better not to.

Another reason is that, if it's a series of interconnecting paths, you might get "On course, "Off course" notifications a lot more than one time.

  • But without navigating a course, I have no way to see the the trails on the map.

I don't understand this statement. Could you clarify? Isn't  map screen available even without navigation? It is available to me, and I often look at the map when not navigating a course.

  • course navigation uses more system resources and battery

It would be interesting to measure, but I think a difference in battery usage should be fairly minimal if the watch is not on the map screen during course navigation. I wish there was a way to tell exactly how many mAh was consumed during an activity. I am pretty sure Garmin has that data but it doesn't surface that. Anyway it isn't even necessary to keep the course on all the time. Course navigation can be started or stopped at any time without impacting the ongoing activity. Perhaps the right solution is to stop course navigation, go explore, then start course navigation again if you want to return to it. That is fairly trivial.

  • Ok, here is reply to the original post because it seems many people don't realize that map can be used with any activity.

    Steps:

    1) Have your hike (or run, or whatever) activity configured to have the map screen. It is configured that way by default. During activity you can always switch between data screen and to the map screen by pressing up and down buttons.

    2) Start your activity as normal (disregard navigation for now).

    3) During activity at any time you can start navigation as following:

    - Long press on middle (Up) button

    - Go to Navigation menu

    - Scroll to Courses

    - Select the course you need, then select Do Course

Ok, you now have the course on the map and can navigate it. Or you can ignore it if you want. It would still be displayed on the map.

You can stop navigation at any time by going back to Navigation menu and selecting Stop Course. That won't stop the activity.

  • The discontinued Epix has that feature and I really enjoyed it not having to navigate a course but having the track shown on the map.

  • Also, under the main settings Navigation> Alerts> Off Course = Off, Turn prompts = Off.

  • Example: I go to Mallorca and download several Hiking Routes. I put the GPX Files on the watch. I'm at a certain waypoint and can see all the routes around me on the map in different colors and choose to follow one. If there is an intersection i can choose to follow the other route. Without off course warning, without TBT navigation. But i still want to record my activity of hiking. Is this understandable?

Works like a charm on my Garmin Oregon. But I try to get rid of this device as I now have the Fenix watch Slight smile

    Cheers
