Watch face weather showing “- -“ even when iPhone nearby

Fenix 6 pro, using a garmin watch face. Have weather as a data field which works, but after a while the temperature reads “- -“ while what I think is the rain indicator has a %.

If I manually sync my garmin connect on my iPhone it updates, but even with my phone sitting next to it, it eventually reverts to the “- -“ again.

Any ideas? Maybe it’s a garmin connect thing. I don’t recall my vivoactive 3 ever being greyed out in GC and needing manual refresh / sync like this. Any controls I need to check?

Ah good question, I'm not sure if it's always running - I didn't realise it needs it running in BG?

That said, it has definitely been running when I've seen this happen - even in the FG - but with the Fenix greyed out in GC even though its connected via bluetooth to the iPhone. Often I have to click on the Fenix icon to get it to sync, or restart GC.

So if Im understanding correctly, even if the watch is connected to my home wifi, it definitely needs GC running on my phone, for data like the weather?

Yes. You should always keep the Connect Mobile APP running in the background of your iPhone. The weather data arrives through the internet and the GCM APP pushes it to your watch. The Support Center article will go over the settings to double check on your iPhone.

Thank you very helpful. I’ll try those steps and maybe re link the fenix to the app.

Out of interest what does the onboard watch WiFi do? It seems a bit redundant if GC app is still needed.

The primary purpose of the Wi-Fi is to download your music playlist for the supported Music APPS. It is also a backup to Bluetooth pairing through the Connect Mobile APP on your smartphone. Your watch will use BT to sync through the Connect Mobile APP first before it will check for your Wi-Fi added to your watch.

Ah ok.

so here’s a pic of my watch face.

garmin connect running (foreground or background makes no difference). Fenix is connected via Bluetooth and in GC.

do you need to manually refresh all the time to get this data updated? It’s been like this for hours.

interestingly the rainfall is showing. Does that come from onboard sensors?

think I’ll just abandon the field. It’s kind of annoying having it but without showing anything useful.

Is that a default Garmin watch face? There were issues some while back with weather data not coming coming over from GCM properly; took some time to resolve that for me in New Zealand. However, now, as long as I have my watch connected to GCM it works. I do find that sometime the watch has fallen out of connection with GCM so if that happens you won’t get anything. Hi

With Iphone, the weather data is not updating with Garmin Connect running even when you force the synchronization (Fenix 6 Pro) ! You can only get the weather update when you close Garmin Connect and then reopen it & synchronize. Also, when you do this action (close, reopen, synchro) at 7h59 for example and it's 10C, at 8h00 the temperature display will be the one from the forecast (so maybe 7C) and so on for the following hours. So not very practical to keep weather accurate display.

Yes it not great - I’ve since abandoned it. Better just to use my phone for weather, the garmin setup hovers between useless (nothing displayed) or misleading (displaying something out of date or random).
