Fenix 6x Solar repeatedly (re-)pairing bluetooth

Hi

I've seen other posts (mainly relating to earlier models of Fenix) highlighting this issue but none with a definitive solution. I've had a Fenix 6x Solar for a few months, paired to an Android phone, and roughly one or twice a week it goes into bluetooth pairing mode - the 6-digits on the watch display, and needing to enter them into the phone. It's hardly a show-stopper (and given the "quality" of Garmin's software, I've wearily come to almost expect this kind of thing), but all the same it's pretty annoying, and I'm wondering whether there is a solution to it!

I've tried "forgetting" the watch on the phone in Bluetooth settings, and then re-pairing it. That doesn't seem to solve it. Connect is up to date, firmware is running 13.10.

If anyone has had this problem, and has a solution, I'd gratefully hear it!

Thanks!

  • I suspect this may be an issue with certain phones and/or older versions of Android. I used to get occasional prompts to re-pair my watch when using my Google Pixel 1 XL. After upgrading the Pixel XL to LineageOS 17.1 I don't recall it happening. Since I got my Pixel 5, I have not gotten the prompts either.

So, if your phone can be upgraded to a newer software release, maybe that will help.

  • Hi, many thanks for coming back to me. The phone's running Android 11 and latest Connect, so it's pretty much up to date. I've tried a solution that's offered in connection to iOS, which is deleting the phone completely from Connect and BT settings, and then re-adding to see if that resolves it.

  • Hiya.

I've had similar problems with a Garmin instinct solar. Pairing kept dropping out with my phone over two or three days.

I finally found a solution that has worked! I changed the 'Bluetooth AVRCP version' to 1.6, rather than the default 1.4. I needed to enable developer options on my phone then there's an option to change the Bluetooth version in there.

Definitely sorted my problems out. Hope that helps you.

  • Something else on the increasingly-desperate measures you could try if the AVRCP change doesn't help would be to enable Developer Tools on your phone and see if the "Enable Gabeldorsche" settings is available for your phone.  That setting enables the next-generation Bluetooth stack in Android and might help.  More likely Gebeldorsche will make things worse but you can always turn it back off.

  • Hey thanks to both tapuzzo and jezz211173 for the suggestions - much appreciated. So far, since deleting the watch altogether from Connect and then re-adding and re-pairing it, it seems (!) to be behaving itself. But given the sporadic nature of the issue, I'm not assuming it's resolved it just yet! I'll see how it goes for the next couple of weeks, and if the problem reoccurs, go down the route of AVRCP/Gabeldorsche settings. (I really like Garmin watches, but jeez the glitches in software can be a right PITA!).

  • Hi. I had the same issue with my Fenix 6 and Android phone ver.11. It seems it had a connection with the device (I mean phone) name for bluetooth and wifi purposes. I had it in Czech language with special characters in it. After changing the device name so that it only contains regular english letters the problem with repeatedly asking me for pairing a devife has disappeared. Hope this info helps as it was really annoying George..
