do not disturb and backlight

does anyone like this new do not disturb behavior where it allows backlight?

I hate it. I'm frequently in a situation where I'm in a dark environment and do not want hand gestures to turn on the backlight, but I don't want to turn gesture backlight each time. It was nice to put the watch  in do not disturb and that kept it off.

  • I agree with you. The old way was better. If I go to bed early it was simple for DND to disable the backlight and automatically resume the next day. Now I am stuck with the watch lighting up whenever it wants until my scheduled sleep time. It's an idiotic change after more than a year of working as desired.

  • Settings - backlight - during sleep - gestures have any effect?

  • +1

Clearly whoever made this change didn't give it much thought and created an inconsistency.
    Quote from the user manual:

You can use do not disturb mode to turn off the backlight, tone alerts, and vibration alerts. For example, you can use this mode while sleeping or watching a movie.

  • My situation is not during sleep. IOW, it's dark outside, but I'm not sleeping. I'm flying, at night. In a dark cockpit. Having the backlight turn on because of hand gesture is really distracting,

Totally and fully agree with this. I'm in the same situation every night I go to bed, in dark environment, earlier than my scheduled sleep time

I hate the new DND handling. HATE IT

any chance to get it back, how it was?

  • My initial thoughts were that it was a good idea to have gesture activate the backlight during sleep. After a couple of nights with it activated I've now turned it off and reverted back to the 'old way' of simply pressing a button to turn on the backlight if I want to see what time it is during the night.

We're in one of those situations where this will work great for some but not for others. For those of us who don't like the simple black/white method, it's a simple process not to have gesurte activating the backlight during sleep. After all, a simple press of a button is sufficient to active the backlight if you need it.

However, if there is a simple solution to deal with situations that are not simply black and white then I'd support it but I fear that solution is not as easy as it seem.

The issues comes when actual go to sleep time is sooner than the configured sleep time.

E.g. my sleep time starts at 23:00. If I go to bed at 22.30, i manually activate DND half an hour earlier. before this meant also no gesture backlight.

Now, gesture backlight is still ON until 23.00 and it's very annoying.

  • "Do not disturb" should be a system-wide option that the user can activate on demand when needed (from the control menu) OR scheduled (using the "during sleep" window) AND it should turn off ALL disturbances, i.e. backlight, tone, vibration -- as the user manual says it should do, but currently doesn't.

  • Wish I had checked this forum before reading the Garmin Manual I thought I had a glitch  ... I agree this was a bad move by Garmin and a total waste of time for me with Garmin not offering telephone support 'due to COVID' I spent ages following the manual and ended up doing a reset.  : I really need the Do Not Disturb feature to work as it did previously.

  • Has anyone heard from Garmin???       Do we know if they are even listening to our concerns??
