Fenix 6X Pro tattoo heart rate sensor

Hello,

I tried to search the answer, but i can't find the right one.

I have a 6X Pro and i know from the day i started wearing it, it had issues with the HR sensor and sleeve tattoos. I also know that the HR sensor turns itself of when it does not see any heart rate.

Is there a option that the HR sensor does not turn itself off? A year ago they spoke about it but i can't find it so i don't think there is one, but just to know for sure.

Thanks.

  • Is there really nobody who can answer this question?

  • Strange, this have been brought up before, but the forum have changed and i suspect the content too, despite they deny it.

  • This is the most information that is available regarding the OHR sensor and what can impact it. Tattoos are noted on the bottom of the Support Center article.

The Heart Rate Sensor on My Garmin Watch Is Not Accurate

  • I know, that's why it is zo strange that there is no info at all about this (anymore).

  • No optical HR sensor will work reliably over a dark tattoo. Sometimes one different sensor will work better on a particular person with a particular tattoo than another sensor, but really it's a total crap shoot, and none of them are going to work as well as they would without a tattoo. Sounds like Garmin OHR isn't working well for your tattoo, so you'll have to try another brand, and/or use an external HR sensor when you need accurate readings.

    From Garmin:

Tattoos Can Affect Heart Rate Accuracy

Tattoos can impact heart rate sensor accuracy and performance. In some cases, the optical sensor may not even turn on. The ink, pattern, and saturation of some tattoos can block light from reaching the sensor, potentially making it difficult to get a reliable heart rate reading. Garmin recommends that the watch be worn in an area free of tattoos.

    • I have read this article and it seems to me that Garmin listens to everybody except their customers. Half the world have one of more tattoos and even the 5x did not have this problem.

The cheaper watches don't have problems and the flagship is again a watch with problems.

How hard can it be to make a setting that the user can choose that the sensor stays on. I know i am not the only one that asked for this setting.

  • Like is said in a another reply. The 5x did not have this problem. I used that watch for 2 years with the same sleeve.

I know it could be a problem, but i just can't understand why a new model does have these problems.

When i use the watch for any sport i always use the external sensor.

  • Meanwhile, for many other people the 5x didn't work at all with their tattoos, and the 6 works fine with their tattoos. So obviously just reverting back to the 5x sensor would make you happy, but for every person who it solves the problem for, it creates a new problem for others. Everyone with sleeve tattoos has different tattoos with different skin types and tattoo patterns and inks... and furthermore, the overwhelming majority of people don't have sleeve tattoos at all. So I'm not sure what you specifically propose Garmin do to make you happy, other than your general demand for them to "fix" millions of watches so that everyone in the world's watches work specifically with your particular tattoo.

Your proposed solution for it to not turn off the OHR when it doesn't detect HR is not a solution. It turns off because it doesn't detect HR. Forcing it to stay on isn't going to make it start detecting HR.

  • I'd be willing to bet less than 0.001% of the world's population behave a tattoo that interferes with their smartwatch HR operation

  • with me the same Garmin Fenix 3.5 and 5x the pulse works great and stays on. Fenix 6 switches off and stays off. The old sensor was much wetter. I tried to mask 2 fields from the sensor. that worked very well. but was switched off after a firmware update. If you take the first firmware versions and stick 2 fields on the sensor, the pulse is very good. Now Garmin has also changed the sleep monitoring. this went very well before and without a pulse. now the pulse has to be on and I can no longer use it. very annoying.
