Why you shouldn't buy Fenix 6 (seriously)

I hope this thread would be a red flag for someone considering buying Garmin Fenix 6X PRO.

TBH - I'm using my watch for a few days and I totally regret the money that I've spent. I've been a VA4 user and frankly - I do not see any major upgrades with Fenix 6x PRO

I think it's a disappointment, that this kind of expensive watch (and this is just after few days):

1) doesn't have a nap mode to track power naps;

2) has an unreliable heart rate monitor

3) measures temperature in a totally useless way

4) has not working weather widgets on some faces

5) has no possibility to add a manual activity with different heart rate zones or more custom statistics that'd be included in an overall view.

Moreover - I haven't seen any issue resolved on Garmin forum. I think that's some kind of unfunny joke. You'd probably be better with some random wristband, having way more functionality, better screen and that costs a fraction of Garmin's price. I know, that I should have checked all the features, but seriously - if this is a standard for some cheap tracking devices you'd expect top quality from a high-end device.

For me, it's for now just a really expensive and good looking watch. But if you'd like to spend this kind of money - maybe some nice mechanical watch or a wristband and a lot of saved money?

  • seems like a lot of effort to make an account to post this. I feel the money I spent on mine was worth it and have no regrets

  • that's how disappointed I am

  • Now I'm not meaning to be harsh here but.. well did you do any due diligence on the watch? I've never relied on a OHR for heart rate measurements, far too unreliable, whether that's the Fenix or Apple Watch (and I've owned the Fenix 3, 5 and 6). Chest Strap all the way.

I'm not sure how you're measuring temperature but as long as your wrist isn't covered up you should get a reasonable temperature rate, if you want more reliability than you should start using the Garmin Tempe paired to your watch.

Weather widgets, surely that's down to the watch face authors to fix?

I love my watch, (and the previous Fenix 3 and 5 I owned previously, I've even sold my Apple Watch 3 and Suunto Spartan Ultra as they were lesser watches in my experience).I purchased it for it's looks and it works for me, I understand the limitations (HRM) and I don't use 3rd party watch faces but if I was going to be spending a few hundred $ / £ / Euro's on a watch I for damned sure would have done my due diligence and knew what I was getting myself in for.

  • I had tried two 6S a year ago maybe and the ohr was not good in normal wear. I just got a 6 Pro two weeks ago and did the same test i did with the 6S and OHR was close to perfect. Could not ask for better. I do use a chest strap for workout. It also found my smart trainer and now it controls my bike for workout. The watch looks great, battery is stellar. Do not regret the purchase.

  • 1) are you retired ?, this is a premiere sports watch, its for people who go out doing all sorts of activities, and you want it to track a "power" nap, is that really the best you could do.

    2) I wearing it hiking and MTB and swimming and I have not found any problem with the HRM, so it works, but for you there may be an issue or fault. you dont give any details of what was wrong or what you expect it to do so really people cant comment on that. If you want an accurate HRM then buy a chest strap that applies to ALL watches.

    3) Measuring temperature, again you give no details, as far I know it measures ambient temperature of the watch where ever that is. If its on your body it will probably give your body temp, if you leave it on a table in the sun it will give you that temp, what do you expect it to do, it can only measure the temp around it at the time. If you want an external temp then buy a separate temp sensor.

    4) No idea what's going on there with the widgets, go ask the author of the face, maybe you haven't paid for it. again you give no details that anybody can comment on.

    5) The screen is the way it is because its a sports watch NOT a smart watch, I don't want a full colour touch screen, what I want and so do all long distance runner, and tri athletes is a battery life that will exceed what ever it is they are doing. For me 60 hours + with GPS on is brilliant, so are the maps, and OS grid references and hiking metrics.

You haven't really brought up any issues that mean much in the context of a sports watch, like gps tracking, activity metrics, pulse ox, etc etc etc.

  • Oh, what a nice shitstorm :D

    1) I'm not retired, I know it's a sports watch, I use it for tracking. However, with a "body battery", "sleep tracking" - not adding the nap control feature is some kind of misunderstanding - how it should be reflected in your body battery". Not reliable.

    2) "I wear chest-band for training" - yes, that's why I bought the watch -= to buy more gadgets! :D

    3) yes, you can have a measurement of the temperature ... if you take off your watch for 30 minutes :) it's neither showing your body temp or the outside temperature. So basically - you can carry an additional thermometer with you - it's more useful. Of course, I can buy Garmin temp - another device to supplement the watch, yay!

Ok, guys, I get it - it has a great battery, it's durable, nice GPS and the screen is not important. But honestly - don't see much difference between VA4.

This is a thread for people considering buying this watch and haven't thought about everything. This is not a fanboy review, but a review of an actually disappointed user

  • You don't get it. the watch temp sensor can only give you the temp of the watch at the site of the sensor. when its warmed by the body, that the temp it will give you. If you take it off and let the temp stabilise it will give you the ambient temp around the watch assuming it isn't in the sun or on a hot plate or on an ice cube. Place any temp gauge in direct sunlight and it wont give an accurate reading.

What temp do you expect it to magically give you ?, the sensor is in the watch, When the watch is on your wrist it has a certain amount of stored thermal energy which is stored in the matter of the watch, which the sensor measures, it takes time for the watch to cool down or heat up. Its physics, eventually it will give you the ambient temp, but don't expect it in 5 mins.

If you want an accurate temperature at the top of your back pack (not in direct sunlight of course) buy a temp sensor that has a minimal time lag when changing temperature.

  • It's not giving you your body temp (internal) only skin temp. I understand the physics, however - there are some devices capable of calculating your body temp. It's just a matter of algorithms/placement of the sensor

  • Not as simple as that, depends how tight the watch is held against the skin, depends on if the watch is exposed to the air, like when wearing a T shirt, depends on whether its a sunny day or raining, or windy or all 3, depends on whether you have clothing over the watch like a base layer of a full waterproof shell, all these things change what temp the watch will be at, the whole point is, its just a guide, take it with a pinch of salt, if you want an accurate ambient temperate then buy a proper ambient air sensor, if you want an accurate body temperature then buy a bluetooth enabled anal probe. !!

All algorithm based temperatures will just be a best average guess.

  • Point 5. You are absolutely right here! A surprisingly common fallacy is that people buy a fenix as a smartwatch, and there are surely much better choices on the market.
