Intensity Minutes not calculating

I’ve only had f6x Pro since Christmas but usually walk 4 times per week and average around 250 intensity minutes per week.

This week I have done a few hilly walks (same walks that usually generate data) however only one activity (today) generated data.
So far I have 47 minutes complete and that was for today.

It is showing 47 minutes in both the watch and Garmin Connect. I’ve been on beta 14.72 for a few weeks. I know IM is relative to HR (although I have it set to Automatic in GCM) but nothing has been changed and Hr is consistent across activities, it’s like it just hasn’t calculated it.

  • Try doing a hard reset.- hold the top left button until the screen goes blank and then turn back on.

  • Do you start an activity when you do your walks?
What I realised is, that intensity minute are typically only granted when you start an activity. If you do the same walk without starting an activity you will not get intensity minutes.

  • Yes, I start a walking activity each time and they record fine and show up in the activity list. For some reason IM was not calculated for activities 26/27 January but worked again yesterday.

By the way, I have also read that you do NOT need to record an activity to get IM, you just have to be wearing the watch. I did a bit of research when I couldn’t work out why I didn’t get IM when cycling with my Edge 530 and the general consensus seems to be that as long as you just passively wear the wearable (fenix in my case), you get the IM. I haven’t tested that yet as not cycling at the moment.

I know IM is relative to HR (although I have it set to Automatic in GCM) but nothing has been changed and Hr is consistent across activities,

When you say consistent, do you mean average HR for the activity?  Intensity minutes must have 10 consecutive mins in your zone to register.  If you go 9 mins 45 secs in your zone and then drop out, the 10 min "counter" starts over again and your given no credit for that 9 min 45 secs.  You could do an hour workout with a high enough HR to count towards IM's, but if you continually drop out of that consecutive 10 min HR zone, you'll get zero credit for IM's for that activity.  From the support website:

    Are there any other requirements?

In order to earn intensity minutes credit, you must reach or exceed 10 consecutive minutes where either your step count rate or heart rate is elevated above the threshold that is considered moderate intensity. Performing a more vigorous activity resulting in a high heart rate can double your credit minutes allowing you to meet your weekly goal faster.

  • Not really average HR, more the type of activity or my behaviour during it, ie walking on the same trails, stopping periodically to look at some wildlife or waterfall, take a photo etc.

This first data was from the 27th which was a harder walk, we stopped at a really steep section at the midpoint where my daughter went on for a bit and for a couple of photos on the way back down, this did not record any IM but was a decent workout. The second lot of data below was from yesterday and DID record IM.

You may be right, there may have just been the right circumstances for the two activities on the 26/27 that caused it to drop out, but it doesn’t seem quite right.

  • I have the same issue with any non-running activities. Basically next to no intensity minutes for an hour soccer game with avg HR 145. Should be 60 min or so vigorous but it gave 8 mins of moderate. I wear a chest strap and the HR data downloads when I save the activity, so I always assumed it was related to that somehow. Any solutions to this?

If it is not HRM-Pro or HRM-Pro Plus, then you will not get any Intensity Minutes (if they are not connected to the watch live), since only the two named straps support that feature. And if it is the HRM-Pro (Plus), then you have to have it paired also directly with Garmin Connect, in order to download the data directly into your GC account.
