how to log alternating exercise reps

when doing a strength workout, how should i log an alternating movement, such as alternating shoulder press, to ensure the amount of weight moved is accurate?

e.g. say i do 10 left arm, 10 right arm at 20kg.

should i log 10 or 20 reps to see an accurate value of 400kg of weight moved?

  • You should be logging it as 10 reps because that's really the total amount reps for each arm you did even though you did the arms separately. What you can do is record each arm as a separate set if you want the total weight moved to reflect the 400kg. You can edit the exercises after the fact in Garmin Connect and add the extra set there. Personally, in your example I would just record 10 reps at 20kg and not worry about the total weight moved not being accurate. As long as I'm recording my data consistently that way I will still be able to track progress accurately.

  • It's up to you, as long as you're consistent you'll be able to track your progress in the reports. If total weight moved is an important metric for you you'll need to either enter 20 reps or do 10 but double the weight. Either way as long as your consistent you'll be able to see progress.
