Training Status Confusing

VO2max is 45 and my load is 433. Ran a 10K Saturday and tried to keep my HR between 140-155 but the Training Status says "Unproductive". How is that unproductive? Doesn't make sense to me. Keeps saying "low aerobic shortage" too. I try to do less intense activities but it keeps giving me the unproductive moniker. What gives?

  • Low aerobic is Z1 Z2 training...very low intensity...for me as a 68 cyclist means riding with power 125w and around 100BPM. That run is probably way too hard...sometimes/often less intensity is actually better.

  • My impression is that Garmin favours a balanced training load and rewards an increasing VO2max. If VO2max is not improving then you're treading water. If it's reducing then your training is unproductive. You are draining yourself without increasing fitness.

Garmin may display VO2max without decimal places, but internally I think it tracks VO2max with greater precision. My training has been severely lacking in anaerobic content for some time. Yesterday I did a tough interval session on the bike. My training status switched from unproductive/recovery to peaking. My VO2max value has not changed, but there is an up arrow beside it, indicating improvement.

Also look at your performance condition during the activity. If you show positive numbers some of the time it is encouraging. If you start in the negative and stay there then you can assume that you're underperforming during that session and wearing yourself down rather than increasing fitness.

These are just my personal feelings on the topic based on my own experience and observations, not facts, but just something to consider.

  • Don't worry, Im unproducrive almost all the time but Im running with Garmin coach, who ask me to run like this. Garmin is stupid device. My Garmin coach gives me training goals, and Garmin watch says its unproducrive. Thats pretty stupid from them.

  • Training status is only for running ? right ? i do not run so i never have a training status from what i can tell. I cycle, strength and swim. Looks like i do not get a training status. i do get a training load though

  • I’ve always had Training Status showing in GCM with only cycling and an Edge 530, never had load focus in GCM with only the Edge though, that only started working when I also got the f6x pro.

I don’t run as such, only walk activities on the fenix and cycle on the 530, but Training Status can be selected individually for each device which is a little confusing as potentially I could be overtraining on one and undertrained on the other, although Load Focus seems to be combined.

  • Not sure then. right now i get no status. if i click the button  it says run outdoor with heart rate to see status. So if there is a way to have training status for cycling, that would be awesome as i do not run. I do walk though.

  • this was pretty funny, i actually lol'd

  • I seldom run, but I cycle almost daily, indoors with a power meter. All my training status/load data is maintained and updated daily from cycling.

  • I did some research and indeed you need a power meter. i just found out that my smart trainer is recognized with my watch so it can get power. will ride for 2 weeks and see if i get a status. i am still on 12.20 and read some threads that status disappeared with this version.

  • Basically trainings status gets unproductive when your training load increases and your VO2max decreases (a certain amount).

VO2max is calculated using pace and heart rate. It's kind of easy to get into unproductive.

I really don't give a sh.. on it any more.
