Daily suggest workouts impact on the training status (VO2max)

Hi,

Today I followed the suggested workout which was basically sprinting intervals during 50 mins. At the end the calculated VO2max decreased and my training status became unproductive. It seems that the Garmin calculation of training status doesn't take into account the type of workout being made in the running mode (thought it does so it in the other modes cardio, strength, etc.). In my opinion, the interval type of workouts shouldn't affect VO2max. I am a Runalyze user and that exactly what it does: when I define a workout as flexibility training - interval, VO2max isn't recalculated. Comparing Garmin Connect to Runalyze, it seems that Garmin calculations are less precise, as they apparently don't take into account elevation while in Runalyze you can even configure the compensations.

Concluding, it would be nice if Garmin implements a features for the user to decide if a given (Run mode) workout would contribute or not to the VO2max calculation, after the workout is finished. Otherwise, the daily suggested workouts will continue to give misleading training status.

regards,

antonio

  • In the same vein, the Performance Condition during a suggest workouts... Garmin suggestion told me to run at a low pace, ok fair enough I can do way faster but let's go to follow this suggestion, results 6-7 minutes later a minus score. So unmotivating...

  • I think it’s a bad idea to eliminate workouts from the training calculation. That could lead to actually overtraining while the algorithm could indicate under training. The suggested workouts don’t seem to match up with the training status. If you want to increase the VO2 max metric then it seems the best way to do it is to keep all three bars in the optimal range on the load focus page.

  • It is not to eliminate workouts from the training calculation, but to decide if they affect or not VO2max calculation. A specific run training (intervaled for example) would continue to contribute to the training load, in the way e.g. cardio workouts or strength do. Runalyze stilsl calculating training strain, workload ratio, stress balance, etc. when I (re)classify an activity as not running.

  • I also think it's a problem. Follow sugestions and stats go down.

Also another problem is training status disapeard without activity with Vo2max after 2 weeks. I run mostly trail running, every 1-1,5 week I do fast run in city to kept training status and calculate Vo2max. Why we can't have traing status if we don't do activity with Vo2max? After 2 weeks without activity with Vo2max traing status disapeard. You can do 10-20km trail runs daily and no traing status. It's frustraiting. If somebody do trail runs, mountain bike etc it's also should kept traing status.

  • Concluding, it would be nice if Garmin implements a features for the user to decide if a given (Run mode) workout would contribute or not to the VO2max calculation

Whether you get a number or not, every activity contributes towards your VO2max.

  • The Daily Suggested Workout is intended to balance out the various categories of Low Aerobic, High Aerobic and Anaerobic. If it was suggesting sprint intervals, this is probably because there is not enough Anaerobic training in your recent training history. And it shouldn't be a surprise that if you haven't been doing much An training recently, and then go out and do a sprint session, you aren't very fit or efficient at that style of training. And that's what the decreased VO2Max is telling you. If you do 2-3 sprint interval sessions over the next couple of weeks, you will probably see better results, as your body adapts to more training in that zone.

Concluding, it would be nice if Garmin implements a features for the user to decide that they want to shoot the messenger and avoid any negative feedback, even if that is what the data says. Nothing but constant positive affirmation.

(OK, that last bit was a bit snarky. But training is hard, both physically and mentally. And it can take weeks or months to see results sometimes. Some mental fortitude and resilience is part of all this.)

Also by using (or copying and renaming) the Trail Run activity, Garmin won't calculate a VO2Max estimate. Although you can't do this retrospectively.

  • The case here it is that you do training as per suggestions and at the end it tells you you were unproducrive and your VOmax dropped. Then what was this advice for?

Additionally, i had my load within the optimal lines, but anyway my training was unproducrive and VOmax dropped. So it is not true that optimal training load is your best choice to go better, by Garmin.
