Altimeter/Barometer issue

I have a Fenix 6 Sapphire and am stumped concerning the altimeter/barometer functions.

I'm a former air traffic controller so I fully understand the relationship between the two functions however, whatever watch face I use, it is the altimeter that changes (even if altimeter is not on the display) while barometric pressure remains the same.   I understand why the altimeter is changing - it's responding to pressure changes - but if I'm not moving from home it shouldn't change.   If I calibrate the functions and set my home elevation, it rights itself and the new pressure is correctly shown.

It's pressure that changes over time not the altimeter (assuming I'm staying in the same place).   But on my watch, the pressure display is unchanging - it's just the altimeter that changes.

Puzzled!

  • In the Altimeter/Barometer/Compass settings, you can change whether the pressure sensor functions as an altimeter, barometer or auto (where it tries to make the best guess as to which mode it should be in based on movement patterns, but will sometimes get it wrong).

Note that the GPS doesn't function unless you are recording an activity, so the watch doesn't actually know your current location and that you are actually still at home.
