abc widget compass is wrong

hi

hope this is the best place to query this.

I couldn't see a widget option under apps and software

Sooooo:

fenix 6s standard running 13.10 firmware

Had some issues initially with the ABC widget and the reported compass direction.

Resolved this by changing "north ref" to magnetic.

However have just noticed a crazy discrepancy when you drill into the widget.

Basically the directional heading doesn't match the visual bearing on the outside edge of the display. It's like the outside edge reading hasn't updated to reflect magnetic north.

I can't quite believe this is deliberate, as it's so confusing.

Please note that i have calibrated the compass, altimeter and barometer.

See below:

Surely this can't be right?

Regards,

Gary

  • Mine works as you would expect it to - although my ABC settings are all default.

Do you have “lock heading” turned on in the ABC > Compass settings or something like that?

You mentioned that you had other compass issues, is this another manifestation of that same problem, something deeper perhaps?

You could try checking all the ABC settings, or perhaps reset the watch? Not ideal but sometimes necessary.

  • hi

thanks for taking time to reply. Appreciate that.

I don't have any compass setting called "lock heading"

the 4 ABC compass configs are:

    calibrate

    display

    north ref.

    mode

north ref is the one which allows you to move between true north and magnetic (there are also grid and user options in there).

Could you try changing your north ref to magnetic and see if you get a similar experience to me i.e. the central directional bearing doesn't match the peripheral reading (as per my photo)?

re: other issues. I guess you mean my "initial issues" comment? If so, that was just the true vs magnetic north reading showing on the widget summary (i call the widget summary the info that shows when you can scroll through your widget list).

    regards,

    Gary

  • If you select the ABC widget and then hold down the middle left button, you should get ABC Options and then under that

    • ABC Options
      • Compass
        • Lock Heading
        • Calibrate
        • Display
        • North Ref
        • Mode
      • Altimiter
      • Barometer

Thanks for posting this!  I never knew my watch could do this.

Here's what the ABC Widget turns into when I lock the Heading on 180 Degrees:

I get current Heading, Deviation from Locked Heading, direction I need to turn to get back on the Locked Heading (Left arrow), Elevation (ALT), and Baro indicator all on one screen!

    Brilliant!

  • It’s an interesting feature, - after looking at your screenshot and comparing it to the OP’s, it doesn’t appear to be what is causing the OP’s issues though.

  • interesting!

i've now noticed the widget is behaving 'normally' i.e. central reading matches peripheral reading.

Wonder if that's a fix in 13.30 firmware

I'd not checked the discrepancy for a few days (what's the point).

Having said this, i get no change in reading between true and magnetic north now or indiscernible really.

Goodness knows what was going on with my watch - i've looked at my photo again lol and the two different readings were close to inverted!

I've also done a check and there's only approx a 1/4 degree difference between magnetic and true north where i am and approx 1.5 degree difference to grid north (from magnetic).

I've not found a lock bearing function, although i think you can program a deviation in - is that what you used?

    Cheers,

    Gary

  • thanks Tim

    seems like it's resolved.

firmware 13.30 flash was the only change i can think of.

Note when i got my watch i had a firmware flash AND i did reset afterwards, so was woring from a clean install. So, perhaps more weight to the 13.3 flash resolving it.

Sadly now my floor count has stopped working. So annoying. Pre 13.3 flash (was on 13.1) floor count changes were very well detected in the floor climb activity. Now nothing's recorded. Had to bang in my floor count manually grrrr.

  • Mine has a tendancy to jump around or point 180° the wrong way, Chinese rubber straps make it worse, with original Garmin straps, it either works, or behaves jumpy and won't point to North after calibration.

  • I wonder if the Lock function is a Pro feature only, there is a mention of it in the Pro manual but not the standard 6 series docs (mine is a 6x Pro)

  • good shout - i'm only a standard 6s
