Using a Fenix 6x pro for cycling alongside garmin edge 130

I've just got a Fenix 6x pro and will be using this when out cycling.  I also have a Garmin edge 130 on my bike which I use to display my stats live while cycling without having to look at my wrist etc.

Does anyone have any best practice for using these together?  Can the 2 devices be integrated together when they sync into Garmin connect so there isn't any duplicate data?

Does anyone manufacture a "dumb" display that can be mounted on the bike to display the data from the Fenix watch?

I appreciate the Fenix is a big step up from the Edge 130 but I want to be able to see my stats live on my bike while riding without taking the straps of my Fenix and mounting that on the bike.

Thank you

  • I'm using F6X for tracking and logging. To see my stats during riding I'm using cheap ant+ capable bike computer (Xoss G+) This can display the speed/distance/time/HRM/RPM, and has briliant battery life. In case of F6X+Edge, U can use edge to mirorr the F6X, if I remember well.

  • Just send your HR from Fenix to edge and let the edge record your ride. Enjoy.

  • Mount the Fenix with this:

Still would need a Heart Strap for HR data, but you'll be able to see the watch screen.

  • I've got an Edge 530.  I bought the speed/cadence sensors and it works great.  I set my Fenix and 530 to the same mm tire circumference and measure against a really straight, open sky 3 mile gps measure.  Then, I use the 530 for mapping, easy visuals, data, etc. but record the activity with the Fenix 6xPro.  With the speed sensor, The two devices report the same distance so you get an ultra-accurate measure and the maps on both are pretty darn good with mine so connect and the watch have both runs and bikes.

  • Hi .  I'm just up the road in Noblesville.  Small world.

  • I use that stretch along 146th street from allisonville road to grey road to calibrate the speed sensor!  It is a small world. :).

  • Here is what I do though your mileage will vary.

I always wear my fenix 6.. always. When I cycle I use my 1030+ and use it to track the ride even though I am ALSO wearing the fenix. If you use them BOTH you will have duplicate activities unless you discard one of them before they sync.

When I do a multisport event that has a cycling portion I use the fenix to track the entire event and simply use the 1030+ as either a remote screen or track the ride portion and just discard at the end. Hell, when I get back to transition I don't bother stopping the edge sometimes but, since I discard the data from the edge, I don't worry about it.

Garmin sells a bike mount kit but I don't care for it since it is tough to read the data from the watch... for me at least.

EDIT: So I just noticed you said edge 130 and not 1030. My bad. I would just use the extended display and use the fenix to record everything.

  • The Edge 130 can work with Extended Display, official docs: https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/edge130/EN-US/GUID-9EA2F9B3-505B-451B-B032-0C97493C6DBF.html

The Edge 130 (and 130 Plus) support Physio True-Up, so you can continue to record your rides with the Edge (possibly using the Fenix for HR broadcast if you don't have an HR strap), and get updated training effect and recovery times.

I have an F6X and an Edge 530.  I usually ride with the Edge.  If I forget my chest band HRM, I will put my F6X into HR broadcast mode so I get a HR on the Edge.  Sometimes I am lazy and don't bring my Edge and then I just ride with the F6X.  I rarely use extended display because it is many more button presses to enable than just hitting record on the Edge, but sometimes I do use extended display when I want to perform a scheduled / suggested workout from my F6X without transferring it to the Edge.

Garmin will not automatically de-duplicate the activities if you record with both devices.  However, you can record with both and then discard one or the other.

  • So I also have a Fenix 6 and a Edge 1030. I record the ride with the Fenix and I also have my edge recording so I can see all the ride stats, heart rate power etc. I havent found a good way to avoid duplicate uploads other than to turn off the WIFI and phone connection to the edge. But then I dont get notifications. I wish there was a way to just keep the rides in memory and not upload. The extended display some have mentioned is useless. It lags and it doesn’t show the data fields i want to see. Hopefully in the future Garmin will figure out a way to make this work. Some say “Oh just record the ride on the Edge and all is good. True I can do that but where I ride there is no cell signal. So when I get home I have to power up the Edge, wait for it to sync and edit. With the Fenix by the time I’m home the ride is uploaded...Just one less step. I know I’m splitting hairs here.
