Step counter wrong on fenix 6 / floor count wrong

Hi all.

Just bought my fenix 6 and did a test.

Outdoor, walking 250 steps, the counter show only 165...

Very annoying so much error !

Got also wrong count for floor counts... I use to have more downstairs value than upstairs value... Very strange bec. my uniq floor is at home !

Any idea about poor accuracy ?

Regards

  • Later I will be riding my bike. My activity effort will be high. So will my heart rate and calories. My step count will reflect nothing of the effort. It is a stupid measure to include in the daily measurement if you have better measures available (like heart rate or well calculated calories).

Not agree with you on this point.
When you walk, the steps count is a good value to reflect your activitie : walking. In this case, heart rate is low, and calories burt are also low, but your bondy moves.

Steps count is a reflect of a little activity, the minimum requiered to be not static, that is so bad for body health !

On a step trainer at home, there is no other way to measure the activity than counting steps ! Even GPS is not applicable to measure distance.

When you pratice an activity like jogging, ski, bicycle and so on, what is preponderant is heart rate, so steps count is unnecessary and in most case not applicable.

So in my opinion, steps counter is also important, depending on the activity. When you go to work walking, you move from on office to another one, you go to shopping... All thoses movements are good for health, and need to be measured to have an idea of what you did during the whole day !

  • Yeah, I was being a bit flippant in my remarks about steps. Whatever works for the individual is fine by me. :-)

With that out of the way, I do find the correlation between steps count from my watch and ring and, when I enabled step counting on my phone, that too, to line up closely enough that I never thought that one was just making numbers up. They were all in the same ball park. Just accept that it is not a perfect science with any of them - just a general indication of activity.

    Sure !
But the technology is good now, sensors and processors too... Algorithms are also well known... So there should not so much count differences using quality devices, and of course not so many errors.
My opinion is that the highter the pices is, the highter the accurate should be.

i can understand errors on basic devices, not on hight level performance devices.

  • Yeah !
But steps are not only arms movements... They are also body movements with I suppose vertical variations due to the legs movements, and the global movement/acceleration is a mix of them during all the step.

Well, in fact, I'm not a developer of this kind of algorithms, and I suppose Garmin dev are hightly better than me Grinning

Maybe a future firmware will give more accuracy.

Merry Christmas to all of you !

  • During the lockdown I stay in my flat and sometimes go down the stairs and up to reach my Garmin's ten floor goal. It has almost never failed counting the stairs. However, stair couning is done by tracking the air pressure changes via barometer sensor. As the stairs is not the only reason why pressure can change, weather changes cause barometric pressure chagnes, thus can result in wrong stair counts.

My main problem with the barometer and altimeter algotihm is even when I stay stable sudden weather changes decrease or increase my altitude, thus preventing the storm alert.

Step count is usually correct as long as I don't do strange movements. Also it needs some level of motion to count. If I walk too slow with my hands behind my back, as there is almost no definite motion it won't count my steps. So If I want to reach my step goal, I won't do very slow walk.
