Hooray, connecting to the rower finally, but bugs!

So finally got to test-drive the Concept2 rower + F6 functionality we've all been whining about for years! Awesome seeing power come across.

Couple of weird details though:

  1. Stroke rate is just missing entirely from a saved 10k row this morning. Won't show in GCM, won't show in GC web, not sure if it's in the FIT file itself.
  2. Power seems to be really bringing out the workarounds in the Connect ecosystem - brings up my cycling power curve (which kind of makes sense but kind of doesn't?) in GC web.
  3. The C2's total distance is brought over, but I don't get auto-split functionality that's in ErgIQ as an example. So I have 10000 meters, correctly. But I don't have the 20x500m splits I'd expect from the way I programmed the row on the C2 side.

All in all, a really pleasant experience "just working" this morning, so lots of thanks to the Garmin sweng team on this one - will be really interesting to see how it behaves in a multisport setup, since now I'd be able to capture rowing power from evil brick mornings!

Now onto the next complaint - where's our third VO2max number to complain about!? : )

  • Just to add, looks like on a 500m, stroke count shows on the watch but not in GCM...

  • I'm mainly a cyclist, but row for cross-training. I hooked my Fenix to my Concept2 rower last night and rowed for 30 minutes. My strokes are listed as well as data for training effect which is what I really wanted. So I'm happy that Garmin added this new functionality onto my Fenix. Thanks Garmin!

  • Rick, you seeing a stroke rate graph in GCM and GC Web?

If so, mind reporting back with your PM5 firmware version? Curious if we can narrow this down at all...

I'll let Rick answer for himself, but in my case I certainly do get stroke info in both GCM and GCW.  Here's a link to a test row I did a while ago that shows all the info: Test Row on GCW fenix 6xPro indoor Row App

And here's a screenshot of the page that gives the stroke summary data on GCM for that test row:

I have an older PM5, so the latest software for mine is 31:

If you have a newer PM5, you may need software version 169 or 206:

    Edit to add:

Here's the stroke rate graph on GCM:

  • Mine is now recording distance and displays pace but no longer get total stroke count. My watch shows stroke rate but not total stroke count as it did before.

  • Stroke rate is just missing entirely from a saved 10k row this morning. Won't show in GCM, won't show in GC web, not sure if it's in the FIT file itself.

I've recently discovered that if I try to connect to my Concept 2 PM5 (yes it's on latest firmware) after having just been connected to my bike smart trainer (Tacx Flux S in my case) then my Fenix 6X Pro Solar doesn't seem to receive the stroke rate properly, but pace, distance and power all work fine.  Before anyone asks, my smart trainer was completely switched off, so this is not some kind of trainer ANT FE-C signal interference. What I further discovered is doing a forced power off (hold light button for 20 seconds, hold your nerve through the assistance alert and wait for it to power off) then turning back on clears the issue.  So there's a potential workaround for now.  I've reported this to the email address given in the beta software threads.

The C2's total distance is brought over, but I don't get auto-split functionality that's in ErgIQ as an example. So I have 10000 meters, correctly. But I don't have the 20x500m splits I'd expect from the way I programmed the row on the C2 side.

I'd worked this out when using the C2 connectivity when this feature first came to the Fenx 6 in beta.  I don't think that's any different to a bike smart trainer; you don't 'receive' split data from the trainer, the head unit is supposed to control that (also, autolap in the indoor row settings on the Fenix, works just fine).  For indoor rowing I've now ditched the intervals on the PM5 and use my Fenix for running structured workouts (see details in my previous posts here and a pace conversion chart here); nothing transmitted to the PM5 for splits sadly (that would have been really cool), but it's just much easier to create a varied interval workout, just the way you want it, in Connect.

  • I don't seem to have this problem with stroke rate. I went from BikeErg (connects as ANT PWR/SPD/CAD to the watch) to rowing and all is fine. But it is an interesting observation and I'll keep an eye on it!

    Best,
    M

  • BikeErg (connects as ANT PWR/SPD/CAD to the watch) to rowing and all is fine

Yeah, I think it might be the smart 'Trainer' connection that's the issue (which the Bike Erg doesn't have AFAIK), as you can only connect to the rower PM5 as a 'Trainer'.  Even if people find something else causing this for them, hopefully the forced power off then re-boot will be a workaround for them too, until the issue is fixed in software by Garmin.

  • but I don't get auto-split

why don't you set 500m auto laps on your F6?

edit: sorry, already answered above. basically if you want to follow the exact intervals as they're defined on the C2, just use manual laps on the F6

  • Yes @gaijin - I'm seeing stroke rate in both GCM and GC web. Image of firmware version below.
