VO2 max only when running outdoors but

So it's really cold where I live now.  Down to the 30s. Hard as heck too get out and run outdoors. Been running on treadmill and doing weight training but after a week or so,  I go to no training. Because you have to run outdoors to get training.

So this morning,  I geared up and went for a 5k in cold windy weather.  Got training status recorded.  Feel a cold coming on now. Dam. Would be nice if training status would update,  even if VO2 does not until you run outdoors.  I mean,  sometimes the weather becomes a bit rugged. Work too. Just a thought.

  • Training Load and Training Status will update from any activity with heart rate. Although VO2Max will not.

Colds come from viruses. Running outside in cold weather will not give you a cold.

The reason behind no indoor VO2Max is that poor calibration means treadmill reported speed is pretty close to a random number generator, which in turn means VO2Max calculated from indoor pace will be off. While there are a couple of sensors (eg. Stryd, NPE Runn) that are more accurate, these are not all that common. Although it would be nice if Garmin would allow VO2Max where these more accurate sensors are deployed.

I think he might be saying that having a cold in this global pandemic is a good reason to stay inside. My girlfriend was sick, and even though I felt fine, I stayed away from everyone. I continued to run on a treadmill, and my watch lost my training status after a couple of weeks.

I have the NPE Runn... and can confirm that my very nice and expensive treadmill is not only off on speed by as much at .3 MPH, but it constantly jumps around depending on my cadence and stride length. I totally get why Garmin doesn’t use treadmill metrics in I ts VO2Max estimation and agree it would be nice if they allowed it for accurate treadmill speed sensors.

Another issue is incline. Currently there is no way to record that well. The NPE Runn... has a 3rd party data field, but that’s just how Garmin handles running power. Kind of bolted on and not connected to anything.

  • Yes, that's what I meant.  When not having any runs outside,  my watch went to no training status. Even though I was running on treadmill and incorporating other workouts. The watch recorded for a few weeks and then dropped to no training status with the message to ruin outdoors.  So would be nice if watch continue to record a training status EVEN if there is no VO2, until you can run outdoors.

That's all I was trying to say. So I went for outdoors run to record new training status but it's not always possible due to weather, pandemic or other factors.

Nyquil nipped the sniffles in the butt BTW Slight smile

  • Incorrect, my training status only updates if I'm running outside, Garmin needs to fix this because having to run outside when it's below 0F is silly to get an update on training status.

  • I completely agree that Garmin should allow us to turn VO2max estimation for indoor activities. During winter season when it is down to -20 to -25 I would usually run on the indoor track (so, I don't have all the problems usually associated with treadmill) with Stryd sensor (so, I have very correct pace and distance). And for such scnearios, would be great to turn on VO2max estimation.
