VO2 Max ratings are incorrect on the vivosmart HR for age categories according to all other medical charts.

Why is the VO2 rating on the Vivosmart HR not in accordance with rating for age of all other medical and fitness charting. For example I am 69 and Garmin puts this in the very poor fitness category. I am in pretty good shape for my age and all other charts, medical and fitness,  put 27 in the good to above average rating.  This needs to be looked at.

  • I think you might have misunderstood your cardiologist, or perhaps didn't ask the right questions. A cardiac stress test can be useful for diagnosing or ruling out certain medical conditions, however it isn't really intended as a fitness test. If you want to know your actual VO2 Max then you'll have to visit a sports medicine lab and run on a treadmill or pedal a stationary bike while wearing a breathing mask so that they can directly measure your oxygen consumption.

There is nothing "false" about Garmin rating a VO2 Max of 26 as Poor. The hard reality is that regardless of what you might see on some chart, that level of fitness leaves you with little reserve capacity and puts you at risk of no longer being able to live independently.

But again, the Garmin VO2 Max calculations are only going to be accurate if you feed the algorithm with enough high quality data. That means doing numerous runs at a variety of effort levels, including some at like 9/10 RPE. If you have only done lower intensity runs with your watch then the VO2 Max estimate may be way off. (Consult with a physician before starting high intensity exercise if you're not already accustomed to it.)

  • I just bought a garmin vivosmart 5 and was dumbfounded also by a poor score in vo2 results and age when all other charts everywhere show that for my age I am average.  This is really confusing and makes me feel like garmin is only interested in your health if your running marathons.

  • I just bought a vivosmart 5 and would also like an answer as to why the vo2 ratings are wildly different than all other published charts.  Watch gives me a poor rating when all other charts even the one posted on garmin info says I’m average

  • Watch gives me a poor rating when all other charts even the one posted on garmin info says I’m average

Without knowing which other charts exactly you mean, it is hard to comment. It is not excluded to have poor VO₂max, while having other metrics rather average.

  • In my case, all 5 graph levels on the VO₂max page in GC Web match exactly this chart. If it is different in your case, please post a screenshot of that page (https://connect.garmin.com/modern/report/21/all/current

  • I no longer have a Garmin so can’t compare. But I have found my Apple Watch is much more accurate for my age.
