First time user - Sleep tracking not working

  1. I received my Garmin Fenix 6 Pro yesterday and set it all up, ai was excited to see my sleep tracking. However, after waking this morning I notices that the watch didn't track any of my sleep. When first setting up the watch I filled in the estimated start and end time to my sleep, I have the HR and Pulse Ox turned on, and was sure to sync the watch with Garmin Connect on my phone in the morning. I decided to enter my start and end sleep time manually, hoping it could provide some data from that, but it didn't.
Is there some special trick to activate sleep tracking, is there a setting somewhere, or do I have to put the watch into a sleep mode or something before going to bed of a night? Thanks for any help.
  • No surprise here. Garmin sleep tracking ( and many more functions) live it’s own life. This morning my watch told me i start my sleep 21.37. At that time i was sitting in the couch speaking with my wife . We went to bed 00.30. Yesterday i did a race in Zwift, a hard one that gave me aerobic score 5, and rest time 3,5 days. It adjusted itself after about a hour to 3 days. This morning it still say 62 hour, but today’s suggestion is 1hour22 min at 122 watt, that’s not a prediction that make sense, not even as a recovery ride. So sorry to say, but in my opinion you have two choise, get rid of the watch ( will save you a lot of annoyance) or learn to live with it, like most of the people here do. Garmin «quality software team» is a joke, they fix one error and make at least two new.

    Good luck.

  • If you have Battery Saver turned on overnight that will turn WHR off by default. You need to edit the settings for it to set WHR to Don't Change.

  • If you had another garmin before, I remember to have read that it should be the default device to record the sleep....

  • Thanks heaps for your reply, mate. I think you're probably right, I can't see any obvious setting that would be causing the issue, and like you said, about 2hrs after posting this question some sleep data did sync through, even though I had be pressing the refresh button on the garmin connect app. The data however was way off, suggesting I went to bed at 2:30am and slept for 2hrs, which simply wasn't the case. Pretty disappointing when you pay $800 on sale and the device doesn't perform as advertised.  I will give it a few more attempts and see how it goes, not looking good. Cheers.

  • Thanks heaps for the reply, mate. That was a really good suggestion, I thought for sure you'd nailed it, however, unfortunately when I checked the battery saver setting it is definitely turned off during sleep. Or so it says. Cheers.

  • Thank you for the reply, mate. Another good suggestion. However, this is my first Garmin device. I'm going to keep at it, maybe it will come good or I'll figure out what I'm doing wrong. Cheers.

  • I think it'll need a few days to understand your usual reeting heartrate etc etc. I'm not surprised it wasn't great the first night.

  • While there are some people who appear to have nothing but problems with these watches I think I can confidently say that is not the case for the majority. Not that you'd believe that if you lurk around these forums long enough. Full of 'woe is me' and gloom and doom etc.

If you've got broken sleep data then perhaps check the fit of your watch following the guidelines in the owner's manual on page 13. Bear in mind that if you sleep on your watch that will affect the outcome. There's a post somewhere where someone reports sleeping with the watch on the ankle - a bit extreme perhaps but whatever works for some. Read this link too - www.garmin.com/.../

Running out of ideas other than that especially as you have a new watch. Perhaps check the WHR is on by looking underneath and seeing if the green lights are flashing. If they're not then finding out why is a good place to start. If it's the only Garmin device you have it will be the preferred activity tracker by default.

Might be worth having a chat with Garmin Support too.

  • I have found several times now after my watch updates to a new firmware version that my sleep tracking will not record my sleep for that first night after the update.  If you have checked everything else it might be that you will see sleep tracking data on the second night.  It only happens on the first night.  Give it a couple days.

  • When i woke up this morning i corrected my sleeptime and now 12 hours later i showed up correct in the widget in the watch. The watc have been conncted via bluetooth during the day. Strange, and first time i ever noticed it happen, despite i’ve done this many times before.
