Battery drain after workout since fw 12.20 - reproducible issue

It was some topics re quick accidentally battery drain since firmware update 12.20.

I realised this issue on my f6XPro Solar.

My first observation was when it happened watch is updating watchface every second even for watchface which are not supporting 1hz update, what causes %% of batt every hour.

Now I am pretty sure it can happen after workout. At least it was reproducible three times for three last days.

Conditions:

 - outdoor running

 - HRM-Tri - ANT+

 - inReach Mini connected to watch via ANT+

 - BT headphones + Runcast

 - No Phone for workout time

When I finish workout (running) my phone and WiFi is available, and typically in seconds watch is connecting to the phone (iPhone).

I realised when I finished running watchfaces continue updating every second all the time. Switch OFF -> ON watch temporarily solve issue, but it can happen next time.

As it was a lot of messages from other guys everything is ok, I am going to experiment with different setups, like doing other activities, exclude one by one connected devices etc etc

  • I reinstalled the update through file explorer. I tried the webUpdater, it sees my fenix but I dont see an option for "reinstall"

  • webUpdater, it sees my fenix but I dont see an option for "reinstall"

I don't see a way to install the official FW 12.20 (no beta) using Explorer. It is only possible to downgrade to the last official FW which is in beta. But I'm not talking about that. I assume that you have installed the official FW 12.20 on the device. When you connect the watch to the computer, the "webupdater" offers you to reinstall the official FW. I only found the German instructions in a hurry:

    Reinstall device software:

If problems occur with the function of the updated device software on your GPS receiver, it may be necessary to carry out the update again. To do this, start WebUpdater again and select the option "Reinstall the same version".

  • Having the same issue with 12.20.  I'm trying the re-install firmware method mentioned below and will test, but this has been bothering me for some weeks now.  I don't have any other apps or widgets installed, but I do think it's the watch face update problem.  Does anyone know if there is a way to do a clean firmware install?  Is that the RMA solution people have previously mentioned?

  • Have performed two more experiments:

     - outdoor run with complete setup as my initial post - issue was repeated

     - outdoor walking with inReach only - issue was repeated

I am almost sure issue is reproducible in case inReach was connected to watch during outdoor workout.

Please please comment with you setup description (what are other devices connected to your watch and correlation with workouts).

  • Watchface updating is not a source of the problem by himself.

Watch system is continue to updating watchface every second even not necessary - this is a problem. It is not important which one watchface is used, in case system is going to this crazy update any watchface on the screen even standard one will cause batt drain.

  • I'm using a Fenix 6x Pro saphhire with 12.20 loaded.  I do have a Tri-HRM paired when I run or mountain bike (which would use and ANT+ connection).  The battery widget shows a drain of ~ 0.3-0.6%/hr depending on use, which is 3-6x more than previous.  I'm going to try and re-charge/reset and see again the general battery drain, but I used to go at least 2 weeks without charging.  Now it seems like every 5-7 days or so, with no change in usage.

  • battery drain since firmware update 12.20.
I had the battery consumption problem with the 11.75 beta. Reverting to the baseline FW solved the problem, now running 12.20 without an issue.
  • The battery widget shows a drain of ~ 0.3-0.6%/

Battery widgets are third-party apps (not developed by Garmin) that do not reliably indicate battery consumption and can themselves contain errors.

I don't see any sense in adding further sources of error. There may be incompatibilities (CIQ /SDK/ FW).

The ONLY reliable statement about battery consumption can only be made through observation over a certain period of time.

How much battery do I use over 24 hours. Or how long does a charge last. But not by battery widget.

There are already enough entries here in the forum that show how contradicting these widgets can be.

Forget about those battery widgets, and see what the watch is REALLY using.

  • hope Garmin should listen and fix in the next update

One can hope a lot. Did you report the problem and your suspicions to the beta team??

It was just announced 13.0 PRC. However, there is nothing to be found in the changelog about this. I am curious if v13 will change something for you.

  • yes, I have reported to the Garmin via support site online chat and email, unfortunately there is a feeling they didn't listen, just suggesting in response to delete apps, reset watch, etc etc, all typical nonsense.

And yes, I am also didn't find any mention re batt drain in the change log.
