Garmin coach 10K coach Jeff runs to long

Hi all,

I started the garmin coach program 7 weeks ago. I know that this coach uses long runs but for tomorrow it says I have to do a run of 21km.

Is this correct or does the program have a bug in it? Can't believe you have to make a run of 21k in prcess of a 10k goal. What am I missing?

Thanks again.

  • It's not uncommon to have a long easy run well above the race distance to build endurance.  Listen to your body and go as far as you feel and end if the workout early if desired.

I used Jeff's 5k plan and ended up with planned long easy runs of 8/9 miles.

Well above race distance I get, but more than twice the distance is a bit to much I think.

Furthermore I stated that Saturday is my designated day for long runs. I find it really strange that I get the half marathon on a Tuesday. I don't really have so much time for running on a week day.

I feel like I choose the wrong coach but I'm already half way in so can't stop.

Pretty much this.  There's a thin edge between training to potential and training to injury.

But to answer the question 21K in a 10K plan isn't something I've seen before personally but I rarely place in my age group in shorter races much less overall and don't do or engage in level 3 / elite training.

If there has been sufficient lead up to it and you feel comfortable with the challenge then it 'should' be fine if done at a 'omg this is slow' pace and don't hesitate to walk some of it.  But that you're asking makes me think this may be on the wrong side of the comfort line.

If your longest run to date is significantly less than 21k then I would advise cutting back personally but it's hard to advise without knowing your prior training and current conditioning/fitness levels and your overall goal to get out of this training.

I did a 17,5K R/W/R last Saturday. That I got, because it was 14x800m below 4.36min/km.This is to build up speed.

I'm up for the challenge but fail to see the use of it. I'm only halfway down. What will come up in the weeks to come? Will the distances rise even more?

Was hoping that someone here did the  same training and could explain it.

Thnx for all the replies. I've found that it's really part of Jeff's method and is fully based on a run walk run strategy. This just doesn't do it for me and I found out that I can change coaches half way. So I jumped ship and went to coach Greg.

I don't believe any plan is a one size fits all or honestly one size fits the majority.  It took me a couple of years of research and trial and error (mostly error) to come up with a plan that works for me and my running partner.

If a person can swing the cost, there a number of coaches out there that will tailor a plan specifically to a runner's ability, goals and timelines that are typically a lot better suited for a given individual but in the end, a runner has to determine what they feel works best for them.  A dear friend of mine who's way better than me at ultra running uses a running coach by the name of Lon Freeman and swears by him.  It's not a plug for him, it's just he's the only person I know by name that someone I trust, trusts.

  • I'm glad others has noted the same. This is Total Madness.

I have selected 10k plan for goal pace 4.24min/km

Jeff is trying to kill me.

Todays workout was 18x800m in pace 3.59-4.11

AND next week there will be 20x800m!!!

What kind of stupid training is that for 10k.

Today i had to run 24km and my training was destructing. I have 3.5day recovery and my lactate threshold is droping down, insted increasing because of simple overtraining or training in VOmax only.

Half maraton in fast itervals to train for 10k. What a stupid plan is that?!

    I"m on week 11 of 14.

2 months ago my lactate threshold was 4.40min/km/166bpm

    Now i have 4.49min/km/162bpm

AND Jeff is telling me i Will succeed and I'm doing great. I dont think so because I"m unble to achieve the goal pace of the intervals. It is to fast and my heart in Every interval is maxing 100%. These coaches dont even look at your results. That is simple hardcoded logic. Thats is.

Look what is happening here. How not to get injured in this cycle. I never had this kind of load, even when training to triathlon.

Get out of this plan as soon as you can. Its crazy.

I repeat, this is 10k plan and guy is asking you to run fast intervals over 26km in week 12!! INTERVALS. not long easy run in Z2.

My Todays exercise load is 647! When I do 1/4 Iron Man race  i have around 550.

    Do you imagine?

  • I agree with all the previous comments. I'm also doing the 10k plan from Jeff. And last Saturday I had a 17k run (14 intervals of 800m) and on Tuesday I had to do a 21k run, which I skipped (because I found 2 long runs in such a short time frame bad for my body, and I'm not able to fit it in my busy weekdays schedule). I chose Jeff because he is the only one offering 3 trainings a week. And I chose the weekend as having more time for longer runs. Strange that it still suggest to to 21k runs on weekdays. I'd rather do 4 shorter trainings a week. I'll change plans.

  • I've completed this program in June and it was awsome!

I wanted to run 10k in less than 50min coming from a p.b. of 53 min.

In the last month trainings were very hard, but I've discovered later that they were verey very useful to reach the goal.

    In a week i had a 20x800m at 4:45/km + 20x800m at 5:00/km + 24km of easy run at 6:10/km.

Very very hard, but finally I run 10km in 48min, with VO2MAX grown from 47 in march to 51 in june.and  anaerobic threshold of 173bpm at 4:53/km

Do it as it is and you will be happy for results. Ah...no injuries in 14 weeks!

  • My worst 10 km.
    Program actually very weird.
After very intense training, 24km, 20 x 800. The training program left me about 10 days with very light sessions. But I wanted to follow the program strictly to the end to see what would happen. There was no miracle.
    I would advise against it.
