Treadmill speed

I know this has been asked before but I don’t see a recent post, and most answers recommend a foot pod, which is no longer produced.

so, same question - how are folks getting accurate speed readings on the treadmill? It seems the running dynamics pod won’t solve that problem; true?

maybe a device like a stryd?

thanks all

  • There's a calibration when you first run on treadmill. When you hit 1 mile, or KM depending on your settings, you can set watch equal so from then out, it will go off that. Worked for me. Good luck.

  • Interesting. I’ve calibrated it three times and did a few outdoor runs to help it recognize stride and pace, and it doesn’t really change anything.

also interesting is even when you calibrate it, Strava somehow pulls the recorded distance, even though GC shows the adjusted distance.

  • Goodness! There is lots of information on YT around speed/pace differences, with and without inclination and accuracy.

I first tried to use the watch with its basic accelerometer measure for speed on the treadmill, but it wasn't at all good.  I dare say, if that's all one has to play with and train consistently, it'll do.  But, I went for the stryd and things definitely changed to give a more accurate and precise reading.

The problem with running on treadmill is for every footfall or step, the treadmill will slow down, so despite what the treadmill is saying, it's going to be less. In my experience, the margin increases with slower pace.  For example, speed on treadmill set to 9min/mile will give exactly what the motor is putting out, it won't change based around the belt slowing etc.  However, the Stryd will read a 9.2 min/mile.  Quicker speeds close the gap slightly. I'm guessing that's to do with cadence etc.

So, in short, I tend to measure the pace or speed by the Stryd - so if a workout calls for X min/mile, I will adjust the treadmill speed to what the watch is reading off styd.

    Hope that makes sense Thumbsup

  • Ok, i embarrassingly never knew treadmill speed fluctuation.  I assumed a dumb belt at a constant speed and my stride varied to align to it.  (Because we aren’t as precise as a machine, at least not me!)

insightful though, thank you.  Another vote for stryd, and I love the concept of the Runn too. Hmm

  • You're not the only one. I never knew this until I started to dig into it.  I'm guessing the change will be greater based on weight of the athlete, belt tension and perhaps motor of the treadmill.   Won't do any harm to check your belt tension.

I actually bought a Runn within the first lockdown. Fortunately, it didn't arrive and was pushed to buy the Stryd.  When it did arrive I sent it back.  A lot of people have the Runn and like it. Whilst there are a lot that think it's a faff.  The Stryd is bloody accurate equally inside and outside Thumbsup  Fair amount of money, but worth it for me

  • I ordered the runn. A bit of a black frimonth ‘sale’.  I’ll report back!  Agree on outside loss but with my fenix and hear rate belt there is more data than I’m consuming at the moment.

did you notice any outdoor metrics change with the stryd?

  • Well I don't think you'll be disappointed, but maybe a little bit more of a faff.

Yeah,  it tracks an absolute gem outside.  All the extra metrics are lost on me, but they are there if I can ever be bothered.  Additionally,  it provides a power measurement.  I don't think it is at all accurate, certainly not like a cycling power meter.  However, it provides, in my case, consistent and precise measurement.   So, if I wanted to train by power, it useful for that.

    Good luck with the RunnThumbsup

  • The RUNN device is definitely the best idea.

I have a Bowflex btx216 and fortunately, I can transmit the speed without any additional devices but only via an app like ZWIFT. Tablet will pick up the Bluetooth signal being sent from my treadmill and zwift will incorporate the metrics

  • Good to know, thanks. I’m on a Nordictrack. Not overly concerned about it’s data, my goal is to keep my garmin as primary host (same as 1030 for biking).

does the runn sync to your garmin?
