New sleep pattern post 12.77?

Normally I only have deep sleep in 2 or 3 blocks during the first half even though I believe we all have/should have deep sleep every 90 mins or so.

Last night I experienced 5 lots of deep sleep spread throughout the period (although with significantly less REM).

Wondered if anyone else had noticed this 'improvement'!

  • I’ve only had one nights use with the new beta so hard to make any definitive calls. The only real difference I see so far is that there are no hour long blocks where it says I was awake when I clearly wasn’t.

  • Deep and REM sleep phases form cycles along with light sleep in between, and it's normal for a person to have 2-3 and more such cycles per night depending on one's sleep duration. I'd say five doesn't sound out of the ordinary. I'll be comparing 12.77 to Ōura that's been fairly accurate for me. Wondering what improvements Firstbeat brings to the table.

Update: Not seeing significant changes in sleep tracking, maybe a bit at the margin. More deep sleep, same amount REM. Wake times appear to be detected correctly, unlike Oura ring most days.

  • I’m seeing the opposite to R_Tellis - the spurious awake times are worse, averaging nearly 2 hours a night in 12.77. It’s nailing sleep and wake times, but what is in between is worthless for me. Going to report what I’m seeing to the beta team today.

  • The sleep detection is not very accurate. You have 4 non-REM (NREM) phases followed by a REM phase. The NREM phases start with light sleep and are getting deeper and deeper. Each has a different function. The REM phase are very short at the beginning of your sleep. They are getting longer and the most important and longest REM phases are in the morning before you wake up.

There should be a deep sleep phase before each REM, but there isn't ...

If you want to learn more about your sleep, I suggest to read the book: Why we sleep

I only see one difference since 12.20. I get way lower deep sleep despite sleeping more and better. Normally I get between 45-100minutes of deep sleep, the last days I got around 20-30min all the time. And two out of these 3 days I slept good and long and one day around 6h and ok. Strange, very strange. Normally I only got around 30min deep sleep only when sleeping up to 5h and having to get up very early. And REM sleep is also lower than before.

Seems more inaccurate to me since they have done something with sleep in 12.77, in fact the most inaccurate since introduction of internal sleep widget in my experience. But before 12.77 I had good sleep prediction and it most of the time showed reliable comprehensive stats. That also shows in Body Battery. It is lower than normal when having a good sleep. That is the only real thing bothering me here.

Still, it is only a device and you feel yourself how good you have slept and how fit you are after a sleep.

Exactly the same. Just posted in the 12.77 beta thread with two screen shots: https://forums.garmin.com/outdoor-recreation/outdoor-recreation/f/fenix-6-series/246302/fenix-6-series---12-77-public-beta/1176351#1176351

  • For me, no improvement on the latest 12.77 - since Garmin moved to on-watch-sleep-calculations, my awake time are through the roof (2-3h every night).

It was the same with every single firmware (stable or beta) that came out after the switch (I believe in 10.10 if I am not mistaken).

Really a shame that Garmin is making a perfectly working product so much worse - and then don't fix it in months.

  • Same exact experience as you!
