Fenix 6, Wahoo Kickr, Zwift - Training Status and VO2 Max

I’m using a Fenix 6 along side Wahoo Kickr and Zwift for indoor training. The way I current have things set up is:

Garmin Fenix 6: Record activity in Virtual Run mode which broadcasts heart rate to Zwift. In Garmin connect I only get Time, calories, heart rate and training effect data (no VO2 max)

Zwift: gets heart rate data from Fenix 6, power data from kickr. Upload Zwift workout to Strava.

Is there any better way to do this? I want to make use of Training status and get Cycling VO2 max. I understand that cycling VO2 max needs power data which the Kickr can provide but The Fenix 6 can’t read from the trainer when in virtual run mode as it only broadcasts hr and records basic HR data for training effect.

If I use indoor cycling workout will I lose the ability to send HR data to Zwift?

any thoughts or comments on best workflow much appreciated! Thanks!

  • Thanks, it helps so far to get the information to garmin connet. It is also positiv, that you now just have to do the half of the excercises to achieve the necessery amount in a cycling challenge. :-) Negativ is, that the garmin people - if connected to strava - are cheating in some events.

    For example: https://www.strava.com/challenges/rapha-festive-500-2020?utm_source=zwift-email&utm_medium=txt-dec&utm_campaign=zwift_en_ride_raphafestive500_announcement_dec20

It is not possible to get all information and also play fair.

If you do in- and outdoor cycling it gets difficult to know end of the year, what you really have done...

I think that a lot of people use garmin watches and also use zwift. For a wahoo kickr bike you have to wait quite long because so many people buy one. everything is very expensiv, the watches, the kickr bike and the zwift abo.

In my opinion, all of them should work together for their community and offer a way to use their products in a positiv way. At the moment i am just disappointed about the fact, that my trainings and workouts anywhere were correctly stored. Even in garmin connect they were wrong, because i have to store it double.

It is also disappointed, that this problem is quite offen mentioned in many forums for a long time. My personal opinion is, that garmin is in charge to solve the problem.

  • I use Zwift on PC with a Tacx Neo 2 and Wahoo TickR HRM. I also record my indoor rides to my 6X and I use Strava. My solution is this....

Zwift records the simulated rides with gradient, elevation, route and speed/distance considering draft, surface etc. This data all goes to Strava where I keep it as the record of my "ride" and can compare segment times etc..

However, although this data can be imported to Garmin Connect it is of little use there as training load, VO2max etc will not be calculated.

To keep my own fitness data complete I use the 6X to record my effort and its physical effect on me.

Everything gets the same raw data - power, cadence and heart rate - but simulated speed/distance/ascent are only relevant for Zwift/Strava.

Since I do also exercise outside, other than Zwift, my Garmin data does also get sent to Strava, but, for Zwift, it really it is no use to me there and does not reflect the simulated data experience. In order to avoid doubling up I manually delete the Zwift-Garmin rides from my Strava account.

I've used this approach for five years and haven't yet found a problem with it - other than the tiny admin overhead of deleting the duplicate rides, which I do immediately following each ride - before anyone wastes time giving kudos to my duplicate ride.

  • I do exactly this too. Works well for me.

If you are worried about your rides showing up twice on Strava you could set the default visibility to private so that you are in charge of what gets published on the Strava feed to your followers.

  • Same but a fulfaz user... Just delete a few dumb morning or afternoon rides from strava..no biggy.. as for loads... When i i try and get low aerobic my vo2 max drips.. its a mess...

is there a plan to connect my Garmin Fenix x6 to zwift !

I try to use the Virtual Run and active the broadcasts HR on, while I connect to my Huawei p40 pro mobile over Bluetooth to the Fenix x6 and runs Garmin mobile app to ensure its connected and then run Zwift.

i saw my name of mobile in the watch screen under in the app but, when I try to use the mobile app ( zwift) to connect to my watch it's just runs searching without finding my watch!

  • I use my Fenix 6s on indoor cycling with broadcasting HR.  The HR is picked up via Bluetooth on my MacBook..  The wahoo kickr core connects to my MacBook via Bluetooth as well.  Finally I connect my kickr as an ANT+ power meter to the fenix 6.  I start the watch activity when I start pedaling on zwift and stop them both when I finish.  Zwift will record the proper activity and share it with strava including the HR from the watch.  The watch and garmin connect will have accurate HR data and power data.  The “distance” and elevation recorded to garmin is not correct, but I believe that the training effect will be because it’s using power and HR.  It’s not ideal but the best that I could come up with.

  • Hi. How did you forced indoor cycling with broadcasting HR to MacBook? I try Indoor Cycling and broadcasting does't work during this activity.
