Badly formatted audio prompts

Hi there,

I have recently noticed that audio prompts (distance, lap time, etc) have gone all weird. I think it corresponds with the latest update (12.20). Basically, during a walk, I get updates every Km (haven't bothered turning them off yet) to tell me the time for the last Km. For example if I did it in 11mins 35s, it now says something like "lap 1 one-one-three-five" whereas it used to say "lap 1 eleven thirty five". Just a bit annoying really. It seems fine when I am running. It gives the correct audio prompt for this activity.

I am connected to my phone by bluetooth, listening to podcasts usually and the prompt interrupts it briefly. Acutally I never thought about how that happens as I never explicitly connected the watch to the headphones, so, interesting that I am getting garmin prompts! Hmmm!?

Anyone else noticed this?

Cheers,

David

  • I've noticed the same thing running; what was Eight Thirty Five is now Eight Three Five.

The watch isn't connected to your headphones - GCM is overriding the podcast briefly to relay the lap time to your headphones, and you can turn it off in GCM settings somewhere (my phone is two miles away right now so can't check where for you :) )

  • What bother me also is that Audio Prompt is related to an achieved "lap". But why, during a workout,  it is not possible to have audio prompt for the next lap/circuit : something like : Run 1min at 5min/km pace or Ride 2kms at 200W ? Or did i miss something in the audio prompts settings? It would avoid to look at your watch what is next (and the "what is next" screen display has so tiny characters it is impossible for me to read it...)

Thanks! I think mine is working correctly for running but I'll check on my next run tomorrow :)

I don't think you've missed anything in the settings, no - that would be a brilliant idea. You should put it here where the right people should see it: www.garmin.com/.../

  • Was this ever addressed/resolved? Same issue here but with the following observations taken over a year's investigation period...

If your lap time happens to have a zero in the 'tens of seconds' field, the audio prompt will be correctly formatted. Example: "Lap 1, twenty one oh seven"
If your lap time has any digit except zero in the  'tens of seconds' field, the audio prompt will be incorrectly formatted. Example: "Lap 1, two one three seven"
If your lap time is an exact number of minutes, the audio prompt will be correctly formatted. Example: "Lap 1,twenty one minutes"

There was no issue when I bought the watch in 2019. I recall this started happening about a year later.
I reported these details on the Garmin support site today. Hoping for the best.

I'm thinking about decreasing the lap distance to something that would report a lap time under 10 minutes just to hear the audio format for that condition.

    ****UPDATE 11-March 2022******

Search for "Bad audio prompts on mobile". You'll find better information about this issue.

    ****UPDATE 19-February 2023******

It seems like this was recently resolved but I can't tell if the fix came in a Garmin software update, an Android update (Text to Speech Service by Google engine), both, or something else.

    Current configurations follow....

Android system software S1RMS32.68_43-16-3 updated on 12/21/22
    Fēnix 5 software Version: 18.00

I'd be curious to know if the original poster 'David_m_Kelly' is still following this thread and if the symptoms have changed.

  • Went for a trail run today and I can confirm that all audio prompts were anounced properly.
