Intensity minutes

Have Garmin changed the way intensity minutes are recorded since the 12.20 update ?

Now most of my workouts are not shown,

For instance Tuesday did two rides one indoors home trainer one outside, both one hour long, both kept on purpose in Zone two as was low on aerobic score and neither shows up, also my gym / musculations workouts don't show

The only one that shows is a run yesterday as effectiveley I ran in the thresholds zone, it seems no red / threshold zone no intensity minutes

BUT before the update all my workouts were taking into acount, even hiking in zone one

Any thoughts ?

I have reinstalled 12.20 so it not that

  • You might want to check your Device Settings on Garmin Connect Web:

You can set Intensity Minutes to be determined either Automatically or by HR Zones.

The lower you set the HR Zones, the more Intensity Minutes will be recorded.

  • Thanks I've seen that but nothing was changed my end, so I'm fairly sure that the 12.20 modified settings....

I've just checked with a friend, he is like me this, week we are both arround the 80 mins mark, normally we are both between 750 and 900, a month ago as I went out trekking and had 4900 min per week, now nothing is taken into account when walking

OK.  So do you have your Intensity Minutes calculation based on HR Zones and not Automatic?

And which HR Zones have you chosen for Moderate Intensity and Vigorous Intensity minutes?

  • HR Zones and Zones 3 & 4, I'll drop the zones to 2 & 3, but that seems so low.....

Again what is strange is I'm working out as before but have dropped from a moyen of 800 mins to 60 withouh changing anything

For info my activy class is set to 8 as I workout almost every day

I've just found this on Garmin: support.garmin.com/.../

"In order to earn intensity minutes credit, you must reach or exceed 10 consecutive minutes where either your step count rate or heart rate is elevated above the threshold that is considered moderate intensity. Performing a more vigorous activity resulting in a high heart rate can double your credit minutes allowing you to meet your weekly goal faster."

  • That is unusual...I am running 12.20 and I am not seeing the same issue. On Monday, I ran a short 2km in barefoot shoes followed by a 22km ride, Tues I did 1hr in the Gym followed by a 35km ride and then last night I ran 5.5km. I’ve totalled 405 intensity minutes for approx 4hrs of activities this week.

There is an ongoing issue that incorrect settings can sometimes be imported from Garmin Connect after an update.

Change your HR zones and Intensity Minute settings in Garmin Connect to something else then sync, then change them back to what you want, and sync again.

  • This is not about the Zones, the device calculate the intensy minutes using your average HR. This could be why you see many of them. My watch have a bug , setting my resting HR always to 30. I can use custom, or i can use average in the settings, but it always jump back to 30. I have reported this several times direct to the «quality beta team», but as expected, no answer. Check your rest HR under user settings.

    Earning Intensity Minutes

Your fēnix® device calculates intensity minutes by comparing your heart rate data to your average resting heart rate. If heart rate is turned off, the device calculates moderate intensity minutes by analyzing your steps per minute.

    • Start a timed activity for the most accurate calculation of intensity minutes.
    • Exercise for at least 10 consecutive minutes at a moderate or vigorous intensity level.
    • Wear your device all day and night for the most accurate resting heart rate.

    From the manual»

  • Hi

Thanks, my resting heart rate is good, at 48,

I'm fairly sure that they changed things a while ago, Before even if I did a small and quick workout the minutes were counted as minutes if not intensity.

Now as you have to have "10 consecutive minutes at a moderate or vigorous intensity level" a workout such as pushups, Bench Press for instance are not taken into account as these rarely 'work' your heart rate, and not for 10 mins at moderate or vigorous intensity levels

  • Now as you have to have "10 consecutive minutes at a moderate or vigorous intensity level"

You must have another issue going on as it's always been 10 consecutive minutes.

My Intensity minutes changed this week too.  I posted a concern on the same thing, different device though.
