Severe battery drain after update 12.20

My battery drains rapidly after 12.20! Earlier I loaded at Thursday/Sunday, but now every day!

Down 29% in less than 24h without workout. Yesterdays 30 min rum from 34% to 7%....ok, with music but it used to drain less.

Is there a fix soon or can I somehow downgrade to 11.10 again?

  • For me also a factory reset didn't solve the problem. huge battery drain. at 20:35 was 100%, now (21:52) is at 86%.

  • Reinstalled version 12.20 through Webloader a few times and did all sorts of resets and nothing. Still drops 10% in 2 hrs

  • Garmin has suggested a replacement for my two weeks old Garmin 6X Saphire to a refurbished one.

Ill try a hard reset first and report back here tomorrow. If this does not fix it Inwill try a firmware downgrade.

  • If we have to replace the watch for a refurbished one every time Garmin pushes a new buggy software I would probably be on my 5th watch in a year. Garmin basically works on a trial and error basis, what a shame

  • Not sure of your location but in the UK the consumer laws are very clear, goods have to be fit for purpose and work as expected. If after 2 weeks you cant get the advertised battery life then you would be entitled to a replacement or your money back. Replacement being a new watch.

In fact up to 6 months you don't have to prove a fault at all. The courts take a very dim view of "flagship" products not being of merchantable quality.

  • I am not sure of what's going on with Fenix 6 watches, but I bought my 6X sapphire in May and for 2 months it was wonderful, until Garmin upgraded the F/W, then I had battery drain of 30% in 24 hours idle. I farted about with upgrades and downgrades for 3 months daya after day, and eventually my Bluetooth just stopped working completely. I sent the watch back to the retailer last Friday, and on Sunday got a new replacement. (First Class Watches. Excellent customer service).

On connecting to GE it upgraded to 12.20 and it is still working fine. Battery drain is 3% in 24 hours, Bluetooth works, wifi works, etc etc. I did nothing different with this watch than I did with the last one.

There seems to be so much variability, so much randomness, and just so many bugs from every area of functionality on these watches, its mind boggling. Being solid state they should just work, or not, and then the chips would be binned. I just think that Garmin are not QA'ing the hardware properly and accepting sub standard hardware to boost profits, or something is really really wrong with the software environment they are running. Imagine Intel releasing CPU's with this level of failures in the field, they would drown in the responses. There is no doubt Intel's fabrication plants have a failure rate, but the QA procedures catch the brain dead chips before consumers see them.

It is possible that badly behaved software is damaging some of the various hardware components in the watches thus causing failures, or maybe the update process is not 100% reliable and is leaving randomly corrupted files/directories/drivers, which in turn lead to the wacky hardware failures that people are reporting.

Whatever the reason Garmin doesn't come out smelling of roses.

I am delighted I have a working watch again, I just dread the next upgrade and what might happen. !!

  • It can't be corrupted due to i decided to do a clean install of fw from web updater and than I made an hard reset.

  • I use 12.20 for almost three weeks without problem. Yesterday after run activity, I read this thread and when I woke up today, my watch was dead. In the evening I still had 60% of battery. So now I'm charging, then try soft reset and see what will happened. :-/. And I thought, that I have luck with my F6Pro... :-)))

  • Unfortunately a clean install from your point of view, isnt a clean install from th e watches point of view, as the watch already has loads of stuff in it to make it work. If the "base" software is already corrupted in some way, a clean install may not be exactly what you think it is. Whatever you install, there is always software already on the watch which you dont see and cant change

  • I roll back to 11.10... still fancing battery drain. Not fast as 12.20, but with idle use duting work (hr active, bluetooth active for notifies), i still have about 5%/h. Previously for normal use I have about 5% a day...
