If I don't use music, is there any point to leaving wifi on?

I've always left wifi turned on in my watch, because I never had any reason to turn it off, but it has occured to me that I'm not sure if there's any point in having it on. Perhaps I can reduce some battery drain by just leaving it off? I don't use music at all, so I'm not sure what other purposes wifi might serve that I'd lose if I turn it off. I know firmware updates and activity sync "can" use wifi, but they can also use bluetooth, so it seems unnecessary to keep both turned on, no?

  • As far as I understand WIfi works only when triggered.
It is not ON all the time like bluetooth. Wifi is too much consuming.

I don't see the relation between WIFI and music.
WIFI is mainly used for a sync. For a very short time. And it is triggered by the user.

If you use music , you can use the watch as a music player or you can pilot some musicplayer with Bluetooth.
Wifi is not part of any music process with the Fenix.

  • Ok if that's the case then it's probably no big deal to leave wifi on.

Regarding music, I think people who use spotify and such use wifi to have the watch automatically sync new songs to the watch every night or something.

  • I have mostly the same understanding about the wifi.  It is only active when:

    1) manually triggered via control

    2) when an activity is saved (to attempt to upload it via wifi)

    3) When downloading music for one of the subscription services

For #3, it has been a while since I used music but I seem to remember that you could either trigger it manually AND it would try to sync automatically when you plug the watch in to charge (I could be misremembering that).

Otherwise, the wifi is not active, so it will not drain battery.

  • Actually, WiFi is the only way to get music from Amazon Music and Spotify onto your fenix.  You have to sync the watch with WiFi.

  • Bluetooth uses a LOT of battery and wifi is minimum. Look at estimative of days on battery when turning off wifi, it doesn't change but turning off bluetooth and you will have 10 days more.

Wifi syncs automatically too, everytime I finish a workout and arrive home it shows that's syncing my workouts even when bluetooth is off and without trigger to sync manually.

    Leave it on, why not?
