Does the Fenix 6 support turn by turn navigation in courses?

If you create a course in Garmin connect and send it to your device, would that be a GPX or FIT file? My understanding is that the FIT file has the turn by turn information in it. Is this correct?

  • GC will send a FIT file with TBT directions.

  • From my experience there are two modes the watch operates in, depending on e.g. Run>Run Settings>Routing>Courses>Follow Course or Use Map. If it's set to "Follow Course", then I get (completely useless) turn-by-turn alerts every time there is a sharp turn in the course. If it's set to "Use Map", the turn-by-turn alerts happen at intersections BUT the routing no longer follows the planned course and instead routes dynamically to the end point of the course.

  • If it's set to "Follow Course", then I get (completely useless) turn-by-turn alerts every time there is a sharp turn in the course.

If you create your course/route in Garmin Connect, then GC create the tbt at the time for downloading and you have no control of it. This is the easiest way to get a route to your watch.

If you create the route elsewhere, you get the the tbt instructions when creating the route and can then alter them as you wish before manually sending/copying the route to your watch. I use plotaroute.com and send the routes from my Android mobile to watch with Gimporter CIQ widget. Ride with GPS or Strava routes I assume work the same as long as you copy route file manually to watch.

More cumbersome to use other sites when it comes to transfering to watch, but you get better functions/features when creating the course/route.

  • If I create a course in Garmin connect (FIT file) and transfer it to the watch, there is correct TBT directions.
If I create a course in Viewranger and place the gpx file in the "New files" folder in the watch, there is no TBT directions.

If I create a course in Viewranger and import it in Garmin connect courses, saves it, and then transfer it to the watch, there is TBT directions, but it wont be correct at every turn of the course.

Does anyone know how to make courses outside Garmin connect that supports TBT directions ?.

I said before, I use plotaroute.com, so I know this is working great.

Draw your route. Open direction list, add, delete, change, rename tbt (directions as they are called in plotaroute) as you wish.

    Save in plotaroute.

Download, name (long names are supported), select fit file, shift directions 15 m, no pre warning. Download.

Copy file to newfiles folder on watch or transfer to watch with Gimporter CIQ widget.

  • Yesterday I followed a course I created with Outdooractive which has been imported in Garmin Explore and then synced to my Fenix. I don't recall any TBT alert before turns on my hike. I only got the "Out of course" alerts, that's it.

With my previous 645 which was synced via Garmin Connect I used to have TBT alerts just fine.

Can anybody confirm TBT alerts works syncing from Garmin Explore just as well as Garmin Connect?

  • Have tried with Courses created and transferred to the watch by GC (iPhone) with very disappointing result, more about it here forums.garmin.com/.../course---use-map-calculating-never-ends

  • I tried to ask explaination to Garmin in your thread.

"I would like to use Garmin Connect but it send different datas to Fenix 6 instead of Edge 830.

With Fenix 6 seems that it send the same datas when Fenix did not have maps inside. It send all turn by turn information like they are waypoint/coursepoint .

Unfortunately this approach means that is not possible to use coursepoint manually added in Garmin Connect and this is not written in any Garmin manual or website.

Do you have any plan to integrate in Fenix series the navigation from Edge devices?"

  • Go to activities and select the activity you like to change, for run the selection would be Run>Run Settings>Routing.

First setting to check is "Course" and change the setting to "Use Map". Second setting is "activity". When it's set to direct route, change it to something else.
