Best Garmin chest strap to connect with fenix 6X pro

Hi!

I am considering buying HRM dual or HRM run:

https://www.buffcoach.net/en/magazin/testvergleich/55679-garmin-hrm-dual-vs-hrm-run-vs-hrm-tri-where-are-the-differences

1. Does both connect directly to Garmin Fenix 6X and shows my heart rate on my watch during activity?

2. It says that only Dual has Bluetooth, what is the consequences for Run?

3. It also says that only Run has "Functions for runners". What does this mean?

  • From the manual:

The fēnix® device has a wrist-based heart rate monitor and is also compatible with chest heart rate monitors (sold separately). You can view heart rate data on the heart rate widget. If both wrist-based heart rate and chest heart rate data are available when you start an activity, your device uses the chest heart rate data.“

  • HRM-Run Pro: Running Dynamics.

Polar H10 Pro: Dual ANT+ and BT (even two concurrent BT connections, which puts it above the Garmin and Wahoo Dual Straps)

  • You don't treat yourself to anything else... Slight smile

  • The HRM Tri is not better than the HRM Run unless you swim. HRM Run works perfectly for cycling too. I had both and actually thought the Run had better build quality of the two - the sensor pads are seamlessly moulded to the strap whereas on the Tri it looked like they could start fraying at the edges

  • The HRM Tri is not better than the HRM Run unless you swim.

Contact sports (where you can't wear the watch) might be the other use case for the HRM-Tri.

  • Is not all about connection is about accuracy.

Even you have a 5 connection type strap if is inaccurate is equal to zero.

Polar H10 is the today most accurate heart strap. Read over the net the tests.

Garmin is notorious for inaccurate devices.

Today, I underscore, today the most accurate devices are Polar (both watches and straps).

  • Garmin just released the HRM-Pro which is the "best" HRM for Fenix.  It is also very expensive, so you should compare it to the Polar H10 and the Wahoo Tickr to see if the features are important to you.

I've had the HRM-Run for over a year and it has issues with battery life, retaining odors, and accuracy when worn under synthetic shirts (static). I like the extra data from running dynamics and running power, so I put up with it.

For cycling and hiking, I have actually had very good luck with the super cheap eBay specials for <$40, but of course YMMV with those.

  • If all you want is HR for terrestrial (read: not swimming) use and cost is an issue, you can find used or new in box basic HR straps at thrift stores. My best score has been the original, unkillable Garmin HRM1G for $1.60CAD. (that is not a typo) More typically, it's Polar H7 (BTLE only) or HRM3 (soft strap) for $10-20CAD.

If you want running metrics and/or swim use, you're stuck with Garmin straps (HRM-Tri ANT+ only, HRM-Pro ANT+ and BTLE dual channel).

If you don't care about running metrics, don't swim, and want a strap with BTLE and ANT+, the Polar H10 is solid. (I prefer it to Garmin's straps). The Polar H10 has the advantage of also adding Polar 5kHz "GymLink" which will broadcast to gym machines. (most gym equipment is decades out of date and still uses that protocol - you can forget about BTLE or ANT+ on a gym treadmill or elliptical)

I dislike that Garmin has integrated their HR pods into the straps - if the strap wears out or you damage it, it's scrap. With the H10, you can replace just the strap. It also allows battery swaps without tools. I've found Garmin HR pods have an annoying propensity for dying not long after a battery swap. (despite the care I take with the gasket)

You can get running dynamics from Garmin's separate RD Pod as well, regardless of which HR strap you use, but you won't have the "store and forward" for swim use with anything but the Tri/Pro.
