Fenix 6 Sapphire Unusable

Greetings! I'm new in the forum but I have had my Fenix 6 Sapphire since May 2020. This is my very first Garmin watch and a lot of my colleagues kinda sold me into buying one. I absolutely loved my watch and wore it every day. However, after about 2 months-ish of use, it is unusable. The first time it seemed odd was when my watch woke me up in the morning vibrating excessively. From then on, the watch has about a 5 second delay before it registers any button I press, etc. Notifications now makes the watch vibrate excessively. Due to this, the battery drains in less than a day. I have tried soft/hard resetting it. I have talked to a support person via chat and told me to do the same thing. I have not been able to use my watch for the past 2 months (give or take).

I'm in the military stationed in Germany and bought the watch at our PX. Unfortunately, I did not pay extra for the protection plan. Garmin US support directed me to the UK branch, then UK branch directed me to the Germany branch. I have absolutely 0 luck with getting a hold of the German branch.

I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem and what steps do I need to take to have it checked out/get repaired for a software issue, or if Garmin support actually reads the forum to give better guidance.

I appreciate all the help!

  • This is really a user discussion forum, and Garmin Support generally do not provide support here.

Most people find Garmin Support considerably faster and more responsive over the phone than via email. Although I could understand that after the buck-passing exercise you have endured, you are pretty frustrated.

  • plug watch in to PC.

Run file explorer, find the fenix dir, go into garmin dir

    delete GarminDevice.XML

Turn watch off and on again, the file will be recreated and it just might sort things out.

Support told me to do this after I upgraded as I had excessive battery drain, and its worked so far.

Did this last night as well as updated my watch to 11.10. Still no changes except that there is a noticeable difference with the delay from before. Step counter and HR still doesn't work. Notifications still causes the watch to long vibrate 3 times.

Watch also have drained from 14 days to 12 days in less than 2 hours.

Did you call support or chat?

  • Hi, I chatted to them. Guy basically said this only affected a subset of the fenix 6 watches, 6X pro sapphire I think, and if deleting the file didnt cure it, then send the watch back to Garmin or from where you bought it.

Thanks for the quick response! Yeah I'm trying to send it back for repair but they're giving me a hard time and been passing me around branches. Our store here won't take it since it's past the 15 day return.

  • In the UK the law must be different. The contract is with between you and the retailer. They have to take the watch back up  to 30 days and either give your money back or a replacement. After that date they must repair, replace or refund you. And if you have a top quality item rather than a bargain cheap product there is more onus to do the right thing as a top quality product is supposed to work and last.

  • A watch purchased from the Exchange is a US spec watch and very likely the Garmin rep does not understand that distinction and confuses your situation with purchase on the local economy.  If a factory reset will not restore operation, I would look for a warranty replacement directly from Garmin US.  The UK and DE offices will not want to get involved IMHO.  If you start a chat, begin by asking for your case to be handled by someone with prior military service.

Unfortunately, this might be the case. I told the representative I chatted with that I am an American stationed in Germany and I purchased it from a US retailer, however, she said it did not matter. I spoke to the electronics manager from the Exchange 2 weeks ago and told him what the representative told me. He said she was wrong because they would need to send my watch back to the mainland for repair anyway. I will try to contact support again. Thank you!
