Altitude acclimatation

Hello. I have a Fenix 6 and an edge 1030. I have activated the trueup to link the 2 and I recover the data well

My problem concerns acclimatization to altitude. On my watch the widget indicates (altitude acclimatization is currently inactive) and on the site where the app I cannot find any information.

During the last weeks by bike I have climbed at least 10 passes at more than 1000m of altitude.

I received some info on heat acclimatization but nothing on altitude.

Do you have to activate something in particular?
    • Compatible devices1 provides acclimation notifications and corrections to your VO2 max. estimate and training status when the altitude is above 800 m (2625 ft.).

    • Total adaptation to living altitude occurs after about 21 days and the adaptation is faster at the beginning.

    • It works best if you have WiFi enabled and the device is in sleep mode. In this state, the device will wake up overnight and check the living altitude level to ensure that it is accurate and up to date.

    • Training at higher altitudes can allow you to adapt quicker to a lower altitude. Example: Training 5 days at 3000 m can bring your adaptation to 2000 m.  It would normally take up to 21 days training at 2000 m to reach that same level.

    • Altitude adaptation will decay within 21-28 days.

    • The minimum acclimation value is 800 m (2625 ft.) and the maximum acclimation value is 4000 m (13123 ft.)

  • Hi,

for me it started working 2nd day when I stayed overnight in altitude above 800 m ( in 1650 m ). So I guess that you have to stay in higher altitude for some time and then it starts to display altitude acclimation.

  • Hi,

Have the. same issue with my Fenix 6.

I have been at more thn 2600m for over 4 days. my Garmin is still showing "altitude acclimation is currently inactive".

    !

  • Going to Leadville in August.  Would really like this to work.  Any update on how to activate?

  • I have not had the opportunity to visit anywhere with altitude (Central Indiana is not known for its mountainous peaks) since I've purchased my f6.  I have, however, flown and the cabin pressure simulated ~6000ft.  My watch did activate the altitude acclimation feature after my flight.

  • I was told by a garmin tech rep that "hiking" at altitude will not generate altitude acclimation. He said if you select "walk" that it will generate acclimation. I have 5 hikes over 9,000' since the beginning of June and my watch still indicates that the acclimation is inactive. They really need to add activities for high altitude exercise.

  • I guess they’re wrong. I’ve hiked (Hiking activity) for a week at higher altitudes (1500 to 3000 meters) and the altitude acclimation kicked in. Not as much as I wanted because in the end the average altitude  was low as I was sleeping and spending most of the day at around 1200m.

  • I'm about 50/50 with correct answers from the Garmin tecs.

  • Don't really understand your reply. They told Hiking doesn't trigger the Altitude Acclimation feature, just Walk does. I've never started any Walk activity when on the mountains, but did Hikes every day. So what they told you is 100% inaccurate. Plus it's not even logical, because at 2800 meters on the mountains I guess hiking is more common than walking casually, unless you live in Peru or Nepal, of course.

I bet any Hike/Run/Walk activity at higher altitudes triggers that function on the watch. Luckily in reality just living there produces acclimation effects, but that's another story.

  • You are correct. My question to Garmin is 1. what activities trigger the acclimation adjustment and 2. do you need to sleep at altitude to get the thing to function?
