Waypoint planning lake canoeing

Hi, can anybody explain to me how you would navigate when canoeing on a lake (Swedish lakes and they can be a bit complicated)? How do I get waypoints into my Fenix 6x? Is it possible to set up directly on watch or do I need to do via Basecamp (with which I have no experience) or some other route/waypoints planning software.

Have look at Garmin Explore. This is available for iOS and iPadOS

Hi Peter, I use Garmin Explore almost exclusively now, for planning routes and such. I also found that routeCourse (available on the CIQ store) is also quite good. Explore takes a little time to learn…

i think planning routes isn't available through connect, but you can import a gpx file to show on watchand navigate it. Maybe you can use komoot, alltrails or wikiloc (I use wikiloc) to generate or download one. Give it a try!

Thanks for input. So I can’t create waypoints directly on my watch. Does an app exist (iPhone) that can do routes/waypoints (gpx file) and export to watch via Bluetooth?

Hi Peter, I use Garmin Explore almost exclusively now, for planning routes and such. I also found that routeCourse (available on the CIQ store) is also quite good. Explore takes a little time to learn, but once you get it figured out, it is very good. For waypoints, I crosscheck the coordinates with Google Earth whenever I need to be certain that a given waypoint is in the correct place. Good luck and safe boating. PK

Thanks :) been playing around with Explore and I think it’s pretty good. I managed to plan a trip and I like how it syncs with watch.
however, I wish the maps would be better quality though...

What’s the difference between OpenStreetMap and Digital Atlas of the World? I downloaded both...

I use the Outdooractive app on iPhone.
you can plan your routes then send the gPa file via the share button straight to Garmin connect and then send to your watch.
or you could send points directly from Apple Maps again via the share button to your watch then choose which activity you want to navigate with.

It doesn't say anything about supporting Garmin devices. I suspect this "answer" to a 4 year old question may be incorrect.
