Windows PC does not detect Fenix 6X Pro

Nothing seems to work for me in the Garmin ecosystem...

Now, my PC (running Windows 10 update 2004) is not able to detect my Fenix 6X Pro. The Garmin device first shows up as Garmin USB GPS, then after some setting up ends up as "Unknown Device" in Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers. The device never shows up in file manager and is never found by Garmin Express.

I did all the tricks I could find, from both Garmin and Microsoft, e.g. testing different USB ports, forcing reinstall of USB hub drivers, changing USB selective suspend power save settings, and fast start up options, doing an eternal start/stop key press when restarting the device,... nothing unfortunately helped.

Interestingly, a borrowed laptop was able to find the device without issues.

Any ideas?

Which would suggest the problem might lie with your PC. Are you connecting direct or through a USB hub?

Correct, it is not the cable - the cable worked fine with the laptop.

I have a desktop PC, and I have tried all the external USB ports, both in front and the ones in the back, that are attached directly to motherboard. No difference, just does not work.

So the issue is with my PC, but I would rather frame this as a problem with my Garmin device, though - A Garmin device failing to communicate with standard PC hardware, latest Windows software, all known tricks applied. There has never been an issue with any other USB device and no issues after upgrading Win 10 to 2004.

I wonder what this "Garmin USB GPS" device is that pops up for a few seconds, is this supposed to be happening?

  • When it's showing as Unknown Device in Device Manager, go to the device in DM and uninstall it, then do the Scan Hardware option to get it to redirect. If still not connecting, then in the Unknown Device properties try the Uninstall Driver option and redo scan hardware

Tried that, but it did not help. Once the device gets to the unknown device mode, the drivers are not installed and cannot be updated or updates found by searching.

I got, however, some interesting error messages the first time around, and also a novel device descriptor request failure. Unfortunately, I could not repeat these issues, in the end it was just unknown device all the time.

Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

A request for the USB device descriptor failed.

Windows cannot verify the digital signature for the drivers required for this device. A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source. (Code 52)

The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

There are no compatible drivers for this device.

To find a driver for this device, click Update Driver.

  • I had something similar with a SDR radio. I had to mess around for a while uninstall it then reinstall it to it clicked..

  • In windows 10 you can, in the device driver optim , select to choose between already installed drivers. If you select choose driver from one already on the computer is garmin on the list?

  • You have driver installarion problem. Try starting Connect as administrator

  • Not sure if still of added value, but I had the same issue. On a laptop my fenix was connected to Garmin Express but are replacing laptop with NEW pc it wouldn’t connect and showed as ‘unknown device’

I searched and searched the internet but no resolution found.

then I thought, what if it is possible to run Garmin express on the same pc but within an Ubuntu installation. We all know windows Linux are managing drivers differently so it might be a possibility.

unfortunately no direct package for Garmin Express for Linux, but I came along a post with diehard Linux fans who were running Garmin Express in a Virtual Box Win10 image. And to keep it free, they used the developers vm with a 30days key.

so I tried and guess what…. The moment I connected the Fenix to the USB it showed in the virtual Windows as My watch… so, what if I create a new VM with the new Windows 10 version which came with my PC… and again the Fenix was shown as ‘unknown device’.

next step, what if I download (yes I have MSDN access) an older version of Windows 10 (buil 1909)….. and surprise surprise…. Windows and my Garmin Fenix 6 are friends again.

So yes, there seems to be a driver issue. Can’t tell which, but it is solved for me.

maybe someone else find this info of any use
