Will there be a fix for the "Garmin Connect Down" thus activies can't be saved to watch?

The Garmin outage was annoying enough, but people trying to save workouts to their watches to be met with spinning circles for ages and then activies not being saved, that was a real kick in the guts.

Dear Garmin - will this be fixed please?  I hope some work will be done to decouple the device from being so dependant on Garmin being online.  I mean I hope you don't go offlin again either, but you get what I mean!

Thanks, much love.

[Please don't foul up my thread with discussion of the outage - there must be somewhere else to talk about that]

  • Are you trying to sync using your phone?  I had the same issue until I synced using wifi.  I then got a message saying the sync was successfully and it would take a little while to process all the data. An hour later, everything was back to normal.

  • No this was the (I thought well documented) problem where you'd do an activity and it would report 0 distance, then when you saved it was stuck on saving.

I see looking at the Forerunner 945 latest beta release notes the following "Fixed problem with device spinning/freezing on activity save due to unintentional file build-up. Note: device will need to sync to Garmin Connect after software update to resolve this issue." so it appears that the answer is yes, there will be a fix, I'm sure this will make it into all Garmin watch firmwares.

  • Yes, this was annoying. I've reset my watch to default settings, which solved the issue but then I wasn't able to pair with my phone with the outage, obviously. Other people had some luck deleting random old activities.

  • I guess I avoided this as I have always regularly removed and archived activities from my watches, therefore never get to the stage where older ones need to be removed. This is something I've always done as a matter of course since the 305/910 when they would often 'fall over' because the older activities would not be correctly overwriten.

Easy enough on Windows systems to have a script or program running to access the GARMIN folder and remove older activities whenever you connect; a little more complicated on the Mac as Android FIle Transfer needs to be invoked. Anyway, the point is that regular removal of older activities tends to be a good practice to get in the habit of doing.

  • It's just never occured to me to be required.  I've got a 6Pro with what, 32G of disk space?  A fit file is kilobytes.  I'd never figured I'd have to delete any of them.  I mean it makes sense, once they're uploaded to Garmin connect I don't need them on the watch anymore (Unless I want to go back in time and view them in the little Interface?)

  • once they're uploaded to Garmin connect I don't need them on the watch anymore (Unless I want to go back in time and view them in the little Interface?)

And there are a surprising number of people who want them on the watch for that reason apparently!

Not of all of that space is available for activity storage storage though. There used to be something in the user manuals to the effect that when space is limited older activities are overwritten to make space for newer ones. I've just had a quick look in the user manual but couldn't find it.

    I did find this though:

NOTE: Mac® operating systems provide limited support for MTP file transfer mode. You must open the Garmin drive on a Windows® operating system. You should use the Garmin ExpressTm application to remove music files from your device.
Which suggests that the manual was written by a Windows user. With Macs you need to use Android File Transfer to access the watch's files but that's a side issue of course.
  • It looks like Garmin put a fix in the beta released today for the FR945 and FR245 watches, so I would say it is likely that they will eventually do this for at least all current watch models.

  • This happened to me with the watch bought on 7/15. There was all of like 13 activities when it failed. It doesn't seem to be related to just the amount of free space.

  • Is there a better Mac app for MTP than AFT though, as I find it flaky?
