Any way to customize PacePro on the watch? Or manually create a PacePro file?

I have created a course in Garmin Connect and then exported that to Plotaroute so that I could remove turn by turn instructions and add my own waypoints (aid stations). Then I manually copied that .fit file to my 6X Pro and have the course with distance to next waypoint as a datafield. All works great.

The question now is can I somehow get pacepro splits for this course?

I tried creating Pacepro on the watch but can only get even splits with very little account for the hills. It's a hilly ultra so the splits created are not realistic.

When using Garmin Connect I am able to adjust the hill effort and pacing strategy and get splits that match what I hope to achieve but I'm not sure how I can get these on to the watch? If use connect to sync then it will just add turn by turn instructions and ruin the waypoint datafield. Is there a manual way to copy the pacepro across? Or some extra settings on the watch somewhere tht let's you adjust the pacepro strategy?

If this is not possible, perhaps someone knows of a ConnectIQ app that lets you manually enter mile splits and shows how ahead/behind you are so far?

  • CV scuppered two ultra's for me, so I've not had chance to put as much thought into it as I'd like, so I'm doubly chuffed a guess on my part seems towork! I'll test this myself one weekend on one of my longer runs!

  • So I just tested it his morning and it works as I hoped!

Basically I now have a course created with no turn by turn instructions, I have added custom waypoints for the aid stations, the distance to next waypoint datafield is correctly shown (usually TBT messes this up) and I have a pacepro plan that uses the custom splits from the GC pacepro plan rather than watch defaults.

Thanks AJR for your help with this.

  • Thank you for being the test pilot :)

  • Just an update as I ran my ultra at the weekend. All worked as expected, however I noticed the day before that pacepro isn't really as useful as I thought it would be. When set to mile splits the pacing calculation simply use the difference in elevation for that mile, which means if the mile has 100m uphill followed by 100m downhill that will show as 0m of elevation and give you the same pace as if it was a flat mile. I noticed this before my race, so while it worked and showed the custom splits, they weren't that useful in the end and I just used the overall ahead/behind as a rough guide. You can set the pace by elevation change instead of mile which should be more accurate but I'd find the odd splits even more annoying.

Having checkpoints set correctly without any turn by turn instructions was amazing though! The course was 68 miles with 8 checkpoints and a finish line and the distance to next waypoint was spot on correct every time. I had a marshall at an aid station try to tell me it was 5 miles to the next one when my watch said 7.8miles, I knew the watch was correct and it was. Nothing worse that expecting an aid station around the next corner and it being a mile or more further that you thought. A previous race I got told it was 8km to an aid station when it was actually 8 miles!

  • Yeah I always use by elevation as living in the shadows of the Beacons flat is an endangered species BlushBlush awesome to hear it worked well steal this for my next ultra

  • Also to add I find climb pro useful as an aide memoire of when to take a bloody good drink lol

  • This is the activity. It wasn't pretty as I kept cramping up but got to the finish within the 20hr cutoff. https://www.strava.com/activities/3783441386/overview

  • They never are pretty. The Gower in November was a bloody nightmare lol. But bloody good going!!

  • Apologies for dragging this one up however you seem to have (successfully) done exactly what I'm looking to do!

I'm doing an event with multiple checkpoints (peaks, 42 of them!) and change overs / aid stations (4 of them) over 100-odd km's - ideally I'd like (1) the route as a track on the watch I can refer to for reassurance I'm on the right track, (2) some form of visual waypoint on the map defining each of the checkpoints / aid stations, (3) distance (and ideally time guesstimates) to next waypoint, (4) info on the climbs, (5) icing on the cake some form of pacing strategy.

I seem to have got (1) covered almost by accident by creating the full route in komoot and importing to device via any way OTHER THAN Garmin Connect - ie. no turn-by-turn navigation inserted.

Sounds like (2) can be done using Plotaroute - not used this before - is this still the best recommendation for this?

Assuming I get (2) right it seems (3) is taken care of by the watch course navigation feature. Similarly, (4) is taken of by the watches ClimbPro feature (which I think is great).

Which leaves (5) and PacePro - sounds like there isn't an obvious way to do using the waypoints defined in (2), though this wouldn't necessarily be the best anyway. Doing it using elevation changes sounds great - especially as my checkpoints are all peaks, so most between checkpoints will have at least one down, one up and probably a flat.

Any further tips to refine this? Other than of course setting up a local short test course and giving it a go!

    TIA.
