External sensor, how to force Bluetooth instead of Ant+?

After upgrading my Fenix 6 to v10.10, an external heart rate monitor I had paired over Bluetooth (Scosche Rhythm24) no longer connected. Removed the sensor and added it back via "Sensors & Accessories" > "Add New" and either "Search All Sensors" or "External Heart Rate". But in both cases the sensor ends up being connected via Ant+. I have some vague memory of a "Search for Bluetooth sensors" option, but can no longer find it...

  • Hi,

For measuring HRV BT is key.

ANT+ seams to produce a lot of they call "artefacts".

Take Elite HRV recommendation for instance: https://elitehrv.com/heart-variability-monitors-and-elite-hrv-compatible-monitors

Anyway, does any body solve this BT enforcement thing?

I can pair my 4iiii Viiiiva HR sensor with so far anything but my Fenix.

I should be able to scroll down when "adding a new sensor" but never... only the ANT+ appears.

    Than you,

  • Excuse me, but where in this link from Elite HRV does it even remotely insinuate that BT is better at HRV than Ant+? They are talking about chest straps compatible with their App, which means Smartphone, which in most cases do not have Ant+. It has nothing to do that BT is better than Ant+ at all. They ARE listing Ant+ capable devices for those who have compatible Smartphones, and they do NOT mention, that it is not recommended for whatever reason. They only say they have not tested it.

As for Scosche: OHR isn't there yet for HRV. Only because switching to BT gives some readings, doesn't mean they are accurate at all. That's why using the WHR from a Garmin's device won't give you accurate enough data like Vo2max (at least compared to a Chest HRM).

Garmin has been using RR intervals for their (well, actually firstbeat's) metrics for many years, before they opened up to BT. So I guess Ant+ can't be that bad for this.

As for the topic. Philips observation is what I have seen too, in my case with a Polar H10 and OH1.

  • If you search the internet you find more about it ( https://the5krunner.com/2021/02/25/important-training-news-dfa-alpha-1-new-threshold-discovery-method-with-hrv/ ) but this is not the subject of this tread.

I'm just trying to find a way to enforce a dual HR sensor in a specific comm method, BT in this case.

    Thank you,

  • You can get accurate HRV readings with a Scosche Rhythm24, you just need to sit very still. On the upside, you don't have to resort to electrode gel when not sweating, as I had to when using a Polar H7.

In order to use the Scosche with the "HRV Stress" app, you had to connect with BLE. Don't know if that was because the RR intervals were sent in an incompatible way when using Ant or if they were missing altogether, and who's fault that was... But I do know that the ability to connect the Scosche to a Fenix via BLE went away with a Garmin firmware update.

Hmmmm, maybe it is the case with Stryd as a BLE power sensor?

Maybe my old Scosche Rhythm is not part of the range of devices that's unable to connect to Garmin via BLE, but it still works with the Fenix 6 Pro via BLE. A Wahoo RPM also connects via BLE. As long as they are not connected with another watch or phone via BLE.

To force dual-mode sensors to be used with ANT+ I pair both the ANT+ and BLE variants and then set the BLE sensors to Off. Maybe that works the other way around too, to force BLE instead of ANT+.

Nope for Stryd power, which is dual both for power and footpod. I tried in all the possible orders and way. Not just with the disabling idea you mention. I evrn checked the secret menus whether it is possible to switch off the ant+ connection temporarily.
