New watches announced today include Fenix 6 and 6s Solar, Instinct Solar and Tactix Delta Solar!
And Power Sapphire for tactix !
It looks like there wont be next generation watches this year. No fenix 6 plus or fenix 7 watches...
Bad news for anyone who was waiting for a brand new Garmin model to come out soon.
Honestly, though, I can't think of anything else they could add at this point that wouldn't have major battery life consequences…
I'm not sure how to attach the charging cable without removing the watch from the wrist.
Pure diamond sapphire crystal doesn’t allow light to pass through it as well as other types of glass
does that mean that a watch with Sapphire cannot be charged solar?
Other manufacturers do it wonderfully.
So it does not seem to be mainly due to the glass, but to the solar panel over the LCD. The problem is simply that the solar panel must be translucent so that you can still read the LC display.
That, and the enormous battery consumption compared to an analog Sapphire Solar is the reason why this technology will never be particularly efficient with Garmin watches.
Unless you make the readable display smaller and equip the remaining area with an impermeable, efficient solar panel. An example of this is the new instinct solar, because here the display is relatively small and there is a lot of space for a real solar panel. So it performs well in comparison.
Power Sapphire (TM)
Perhaps this means that Garmin is covering a mineral glass with a thin layer of sapphire. It would be nice to be able to get more information.
Have the 6x solar and Tactix Delta Solar should be in in a couple days. I liked Delta over Fenix before I lost it, now it’s the best of both worlds lol Would be interesting to see Sapphire implementation with solar.
Do keep us posted. I can get the Delta Solar with a 20% off from a shop with an excellent returns policy so might pull the trigger.
The Delta I have seen had an excellent display with deep blacks but was hard to see outside due to the sapphire crystal lens (vs Gorilla glass);
