Training Status - multisport with and without powermeter

So here I am, upped my game from a Fenix 5 to a 6X Pro 6 weeks ago, to only discover that I am unproductive for 3 weeks.

I have the impression that the algorithm of the fenix 5 and 6x are different.

Here is my case: I cycle primarily outside (no power meter), with occassional virtual sessions (with power meter). I also run.

I have the impression that because my VO2max can only be "calculated" when I cycle with power meter, it gives me a wrong status. Cycling inside is often for recvery this time of year, to be able to set a speciic wattage for a specific duration.

With my fenix 5 I did not had any issue at all when combining these sport with or with powermeter. With the Fenix 6x, I have. I think the Fenix 5 uses estimated VO2Max as well for rides without power output.

Anyone with the same experience, casus, situation? Maybe something Garmin is already working on?

Thank you!

  • This is intentionally, cycling requires a power meter for VO2max, and will not be changed. Read the manual. As for fenix5 i don’t know, but 5+ was the same.

  • OK, thanks for your answer. Which implies it basically makes training status useless. The Fenix 5 implementation was better then.

  • Yes, and maybe no. The numbers you get with a power meter is accurate +-, the numbers you get without is raw estimates. Look in the iq store, maybe it is something you can use there for estimation.

  • VO2Max calculations specifically for Cycling require a power meter and HR.  Running VO2Max requires GPS pace and HR.

Note that calculating VO2Max requires you to be in zone 2 HR - if your indoor rides are recovery and zone 1 only, it may not be generating a cycling VO2Max, even with a power meter.

Training Status looks at changes in VO2Max versus changes in Training Load.

Cycling Training Load can be calculated using HR data (no power meter required), and this will show up in your Training Status.

  • Don't completely follow what you are saying with your last line. If I go to training status int he connect app, I can go to load, where I see load focus, exercise load and 7 day load. But this is a combination of every activity, not only cycling.

My 7 day load is always optimal, my load focus is either balanced or high aerobic.

So my training load varies, my cycling vo2max is steady since no power meter for outside cycling, but my status remains unproductive.
