Fenix 6 Sapphire: Everything about sleep is wrong

So I searched and a lot of people seemed to have this problem in the past, but no new posting, does that mean it has resolved for you guys?

I have Fenix 6 and sleep tracking is just a disgrace. Not only it miss-records my sleep time by up to 2~3 hours each night, but there is also no deep sleep. (And I do everything right, the watch is on my wrist not only 2 hours before bed but all-day, etc.)

So in the past two weeks, most of the nights I've slept at around 01:30 to 02:00 AM, and it records the sleep time at 22:30, 23:00 !!! That's just awful. I go and brush my teeth a half hour before I sleep each night at ~01:00 AM, I go to the kitchen and eat something at ~00:30 AM, so aren't these enough movements for the sensors to know I am still awake?!

Not only that, but it also tracks almost zero minutes of deep sleep each night. And if by chance I see a 15-minute deep sleep someday, that's always in the period that I was awake! and after I edit my sleep time, it is gone!

I am seriously irritated by this and if this is the case, I'm gonna return the watch. Does anyone have the same issues? Has anyone been able to resolve these kinds of issues? Has Garmin published any justification fo this?

  • Garmin just introduced a new sleep widget and new sleep detection algorithm from Firstbeat in latest beta for Fenix 6 line. You can install it or wait for the next official release

  • Thanks Alex I will do that, but why should I believe that it solves the issue? And I am interested to know that (without that update) how does the sleep detection work for other people?

  • I have a question for you.

how do you make your sleep data actionable? What do you do differently if your watch says you had a good night's sleep last night, than if it tells you last night's sleep was poor

And if the answer is "not much", perhaps the best solution to sleep tracking angst would just be to turn it off?

  • Its using Firstbeat's own metrics rather than Garmin's own. And I know this is anecdotal, but for both me and my wife we're finding the tracking a lot better now.

First you ask if anyone has the same issues?  You must feel you have that answer because your next question is has anyone resolved the issues even though no one has replied to you saying they have the same issue.  You follow up that question with has Garmin published justification for doing something you've yet to confirm is a problem with others.  It's obvious where this is going.  I think returning your watch is a great idea.

    Yes.

As mentioned by others, which for some reason you disregarded, Garmin's sleep tracking has been updated in the latest beta firmwares (and likely in the next public firmware release), and it is VASTLY improved.

Actually I believe it does provide some actionable data. For example, you may notice your REM or Deep Sleep is awful and then you cut down on caffeine and see if it gets better. Or you may do a late workout one day, and you can see if it interferes with your sleep. Also, you may start to take some sleep medication like Melatonin etc., and see if it actually makes a difference. Another thing is alarm applications that try to wake you up only if you are in Light Sleep mode. So I can think of a bunch of different ways that the sleep data could benefit the consumer.

As I said earlier, I searched the web for the question I'm having before I post, and there was a huge number of people that have had issues with Garmin sleep tracking. You can search "Garmin no deep sleep" or similar strings to see it . That's why I took it as a given, starting my post with that question was just a way of starting this conversation :-)

I'll give that a try. I hope it resolves the issue for me as well. thanks!

  • For me the sleep tracking is very unreliable. Sometimes it is good, but sometimes completely wrong, but most of the time something is off, like start or end of sleep8ng, or sleep without deep sleep, or just rem, or 3+ hours of wake time (sleep all night) and i cant trust it. It is frustrating. And they cant resolve it. And there is the problem with HR, oh god HR is big mess.
