Does anyone have heart rate hiking issues like these: (heart rate monitor seeming to get in a "mode" of registering low when heart rate is clearly higher?)

Last couple hikes especially I have noticed hrm appears to be stuck in a "low reading" mode and for example last time track 86 bpm 10+ min into the hike up elevation when clearly my hr is at least in the 120-130 range. I say stuck because it seems to have corrected itself when I went to the app to try to figure out what was going on, clicked on heart rate, then went to "abnormal hr settings" and finding nothing applicable, back out of app, looked at my watch and saw it quickly shoot up to 126ish, and slowly climb from there. No idea how/if/why that got it to record more accurately? Previous to going to the app I did try several things such as repositioning the watch, tightnening the band, etc with no help. On a second hike since directly observing this behavior, I went to this same area in app, but did not seem to have an immediate affect, however still decided to start recording more accurately soon after (I did not directly observe it shooting up to semi-realistic hr that time).

Is there a reliable way to cause the app/watch to restart reading or "error correct" while tracking when you see a suspect hrm going on during an activity?

  • Interesting, especially that Garmin knows about it and that it doesnt happen on the regular Fenix 6 but they dont fix it?? Its still doing what I described for me, not exactly the same as what this guy experiences since I will get it to read higher if I go to abnormal hr settings sometimes. and occasionally say 30 min or more into a hike it will be more normal by itself.

  • Has anyone tried deleting the Hike app from their 6X and sideload the Hike app from the 6?  If what was said in the video is correct, this should work.

  • That's a good idea. Maybe someone here provides the hiking fit of his fenix 6.

  • Hi there. Did you ever get a resolution to this problem? I’ve got a Fenix 6s pro solar that I got brand new a week ago. I’m having your issue plus a whole lot more. Just upgraded from 4s but seems like a big downgrade!

  • Problem is not fixed and it looks like will never be. WHR in some cases just dont work, Garmin is silent about this. They cant or wont fix it.

  • Really? Wow that's really disappointing.  I mean its a very expensive watch. Is it just on the fenix 6 series ? Cause I thought the sensors where the same between the fenix 6 and 4s? I really don't want the drama of a faulty product that garmin doesn't think is faulty.  Thanks for replying.

  • Unfortunately it still does things like this, Ive found its extremely unreliable for unknown reasons off and on, and well, how can I be sure its reliable when I think it is without attaching something else to read either? Recently after and update playing on the beach with my niece I kept having the fall alarm go off and countdown to say it would contact emergency contacts as well.. it seems for most things Garmin is just not anywhere near as accurate as you'd hope, and from what I hear its not just Garmin. I'd take any reading from Garmin with a grain of salt...

  • The larger and heavier the watch the more its own mass conspires to move the watch on your wrist and obfuscate the data. I guess it is quite possible that a 6S could be more accurate than a 6X on that basis.

FWIW I have a 6X Pro Solar with titanium case, so a bit lighter than the steel version. Wrist HR is generally OK for walking, with occasional screwy deviations, but it'll do the job. For anything more strenuous I always use a chest strap.

  • Yep, but part of the big problem with these is you can THINK its doing well and giving a reading you think is reasonable, but that really doesn't prove anything, and the more I get random obviously bad data for no apparent reason, the more it calls into question even simple things like telling me what my hr is on a walk. In fact I just an episode like this where I was doing a faster hill walk and getting about 84 bpm thinking "this is great, recent training is showing a bit now". Later I repeated the same walk and speed approximately and getting 100s...well, so was that Garmin's poor readings, what I ate, maybe I'm more stressed, maybe temp is a little higher, or Garmin updated...just cant tell and the more these kinds of things happen the less I realize I can trust any Garmin readings at all. At least my VO2 max is going up after this last update instead of dinging me on slow dogwalks right?? Wrong?..maybe?..I just cant know, especially with random guesswork of Garmin's VO2max.. So my hope of having such data points with a device like this to give me a good eye on training is evaporating...
