Live Segments when navigating

Whas out trail running yesterday, doing KOM hunting and was using navigation with a route made in Strava.

Problem is, Live Segments didn't show up when navigating..

Had to solve it by turning off Navigation when closing in on a segment (I have enabled start of Segments to show on map) and then turn it on after I've done the segment.

This is ofc Strava Segments we are talking about :)

Any thoughts on this?

  • I noticed the same last week. My guess is that the watch cant handle multiple programs for software architecture or processor power/memory reasons.

The same behavior can bee seen when following a defined swim workout and want to set the pace alerts to a certain pace. Pace works fine and workout is fin, but not together.

  • It's a shame, did you send an email to Garmin to warn them? Because maybe they don't know that we can't. On the fenix 3 we couldn't do more than 3 sports in a row and they didn't notice it.

  • No, I haven't sent them any mail about it :)

  • Can I use Live Segments on my Garmin while following a course?

At this time the segment feature will not overlay on top of the course screen.

My own guess is that live segments are handled like short courses.

I've noticed too that live segments don't work while navigating.

This a serious omission. I often plan courses around reaching some remote segments and need navigation to actually get to each segment. What is worse, Strava does flag each segment start and finish point as waypoints on a course it generates if those segments are selected in Strava. But segment waypoints don't work properly on Fenix either - they get trumped by zillion auto-generated turn-by-turn notifications, so you can't see them coming, and at the end half of those segment waypoints never even pop up.

The whole thing is utterly broken.

  • Live segments are suppose to work while navigating if the course was created in Strava w/ the segments of interest "starred".

    From Strava: https://support.strava.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000919304--Syncing-Strava-Routes-to-your-Garmin-Device

"If you've starred any segments along the route you created, those segments will also sync to your Garmin device as long as the segment appears on the corresponding route page on the Strava website. Once the segments have synced, you can follow them as Live Segments even while following a route."

This sorta works.  If I start navigating a course with embedded segments, the first segment will work as expected; Live segment screen pops up and tracks my progress.  But, the navigation of the course quits working.  I can restart the navigation of the course, however.  Just some odd behavior.  Version 16.60

  • I am pretty sure this worked in the past without issues. Now either the Navigation stops as you described or the segment is not detected/doesnt start.

  • The segment starts as expected.  It's just after the first segment, that the navigation stops.  Live segments work just fine otherwise.

  • Live segments work just fine otherwise.

I wouldn't say so. Live segments are fairly unreliable for me when trail running. Often enough, my Fenix 6X can't stay on a live segment and drops off in a middle, or sometimes can't finish it (doesn't detect me running through segment end).

  • I have an update on this. It seems Garmin has fixed this issue in 19.20 update without having ever acknowledged the issue or mentioning the fix in the release notes. However, it seems, while fixing this engineers have messed something else because I saw a new bug on today's run that I have never seen before. Details are below.

So, first of all, Strava segments do now work at the same time with navigation. That has been broken for a long time and is now fixed. Hurray!

Today, shortly after I started a trail run with course navigation turned on, there was a started Strava segment, and it came up on my 6X and started tracking. However within a minute after starting the segment, the watch had dropped it. That actually isn't new as segment tracking on trails has been super unreliable for me, regardless of navigation, with failure rate well above 50%. What's new is the following. About 10 minutes later there was a start of another segment on a trail forking to a side that I wasn't going to run. As it came up on my watch, I cancelled it by pressing the down button. Immediately after that the "current" position on the map had jumped back to the beginning of the first segment that the watch had dropped earlier. What is more, Climb Pro was also showing me at the beginning of the climb - where I was 10 minutes earlier. As I continued running the progress on Climb Pro was showing me as I I started from the beginning. After a few minutes, finally, the position on the map got fixed, and the Climb Pro screen got fixed and again showed me at the correct part of the climb.

But I find it is very bizarre that a bug like this is even possible. That doesn't instill confidence in the Garmin engineering practices.

So, basically, to reproduce the following steps are needed. Run on a course with two Strava segments - make the first segment go "off-course", then cancel the second segment when it is about to start.
