Wifi Syncing to Garmin Express

I'm a new Fenix 6 Pro user. Garmin Connect on my Mac says I can connect to Garmin Express via wifi. Network information is entered but I can only connect via USB. So every time I want to create/send a course to my watch I have to connect via USB. Is this a glitch or did I not set this up correctly?

    1. Download and install Garmin Express on your computer.
    2. Power on your device.
    3. Connect your device to your computer using a USB cable.
    4. Follow the instructions to add your device and wireless network to Garmin Express.
    5. Your device will sync automatically when in range of your wireless network.

I think it’s clumsy English as AFAIK it’s not possible to wirelessly connect to GE and never has been. It’s really telling you that you setup the WiFi connection in GE. Step 5 should read “Your device will sync automatically to Garmin Connect when in range of your wireless network

  • I think Wi-Fi sync is from watch to Garmin connect to upload recorded activities. I'm not aware that things come back in the opposite direction. Maybe they do, but I don't recall seeing anything come to the watch over Wi-Fi. TBH my phone is always connected in any case, so all transfers are via Bluetooth for me.

To send things, such as routes/courses, wirelessly from Garmin Connect to the watch requires a Bluetooth connection from phone to watch. That is the method I've used to send courses to my old 5X+. I have never tried sending a course to my 6X, but I'm sure it would be the same.

  • Thanks for your reply. Yeah, step 5 is what confused me, as the only wireless connection I have seen is from the watch to GC on my phone. I've only had the watch for a week so wasn't sure.

  • The watch can sync from Garmin too.  For instance, I often create workouts in my Training Peaks calendar - they get synched to my connected Garmin account - a manual Wi-Fi sync loads the calendar to the watch.  I don't have a list of things that get sent via Wi-Fi, but I think they include, firmware updates, calendar, workouts and courses.
