Backlight problem

I have switched off backlight everywhere in settings. When I press the start button before starting an activity the backlight turns on. If for some reason it takes some time before I actually start the activity the backlight stays on. I have to press Light manually to turn it off. Even then if I go to settings of the activity the backlight again turns on while I press buttons. Is this a bug? I don't want the backlight  to turn on at all. I can't be sure if the backlight is on or off under the sun and it  uses too much battery if I forget it for long time before I start the activity. If it takes some time to change some settings  backlight stays on using more battery for no reason. Pressing any buttons to browse settings, courses, maps it turns on the backlight. I can't be sure if it's on or off under the sun. Please fix this. If I need backlight anyway I can press Light button.

  • Are you absolutely 100% positive you have turned off everything? Anything is possible but there are no history of reports of what you are describing. I would definitely double check your backlight settings again in your System > Backlight menu.

If you continue to have any abnormal backlight issues, go into System > Reset and fully reset your watch.

  • System> Backlight> During Activity> Keys = Off (or perhaps After Sunset).

Also, setting the backlight to have a short timeout period (eg. 4 or 8 seconds) means it won't use much battery).

  • The problem is that the timeout doesn't work. When I choose an activity for example Bike before I actually start the activity the backlight stays on.

  • System> Backlight> During Activity> Keys = Off fixes the problem it was On. But if it is On shouldn't the backlight turn off after the timeout I have set? It stays on forever. If it could turn of after 4 seconds it would be okay for me.

  • Your backlight should turn off again based on the amount of seconds you set in the Backlight>During Activity>Timeout menu.

  • There are 2 settings possible

    System> Backlight> During Activity> Keys = Off

    and

    System> Backlight> Not During Activity> Keys = Off

  • I checked and you are right, I was easily able to duplicate the backlight staying on until you start the activity. The timeout only applies once the activity has started. Although this should be a once-per-workout only issue, and anyway, I like to be able to see that my external sensors have connected and the watch has got a solid GPS lock.

I agree that in sunlight, it is virtually impossible to tell if the BL is on - ensuring that the backlight settings apply only After Sunset means it would only come on at times when you can see it anyway.

In terms of battery consumption, it varies significantly with intensity. I conducted an experiment with my older Fenix 5, and each 10% of intensity used about 1.5% per hour. At 10% intensity, it used about 1.5% of battery per hour even if left on continuously. At 100% intensity, it chewed through the battery at about 15% per hour, which is huge.

Bottom line is that 10% intensity for a minute or two until your start the activity is neglible in terms of battery consumption.

  • Thanks for trying to replicate the problem. You are right but sometimes I forget for long time the watch just before starting the activity and I would like to save as much battery as possible when I'm going for 12-15 hours bicycle. I would like to turn the backlight off after the timeout which is not happening right now. Seems like it's a bug.

  • Hi, I had the same issue that the backlight didn’t appear to be working/activating when pressing the top left button. I discovered that the issue was the backlight brightness. It was set to 20%. I increased the brightness and find that this solves the issue.
