Much better traces with the last version.

This the main canyon of La Défense.  The traces were recorded the 2nd and the 3rd of May.

The zig and zag are my exact changing of direction to avoid people. I'm not running and I'm walking slowly.
Here is one from March 2017 on my 5X from the same place:

Before, as you can notice, the drunk syndrome on that urban canyon was long zig and zags and I was walking straight....

Here is a picture of the place:Wink

  • But with GPS 4.1, it was not spot on already ? It's really the change to 4.31 that improved it a lot?

  • Do you think GPS+GLONASS is better in South Europe ?

  • I have done a run every day since since last Saturday with v9 and I am of the opinion that I am seeing a left offset more regularly than before v9.

Pre v 9 the tracks were more often than not nice parallel tracks (when running an out and back course) on the correct side of the road, now not so much.  I even changed from GPS only to GPS + Glonass to see if it will make a difference, still evaluating.

Will put up some examples later.

    Hello RISBAC,

I have done many runs with GPS in 4.31 with many configurations (GPS + GALILEO, GPS + GLONASS) always counterclockwise wearing the watch on my left wrist in external position. (so not very good condition for the watch)

And sadly it steel a left offset very often and the total distance steel shorter in bad conditions (massive trees coverage) during trail running. To give you an example when running 14.35km the watch show 14.16. I have the feeling that they have done nothing for the "total distance" it still shorter. I had before the 5X plus with the same problem and change for the 6X with the hope that it will be better but I'm so disappointed to see that nothing had be done for this eternal problem of GPS total distance. I have to try some test withe the watch running clockwise in my inner left wrist.

  • 14.16 instead of 14.35 sounds quite fine to me, I have seen much worse differences (like 1 or 2km over a 20k run). I will install 4.31 to check. But I'm really not sure if Garmin changed the way they "fix" the distance. Even with better GPS performances, if the algorithm is too aggressive in some situations, the distance will still be wrong.

I have very good results with 4.10 and inner wrist, but only running in the streets near my place. So I prefer not to conclude from that. Once i can run in a forest and in mountains, I will have a more reliable opinion.

  • I am not sure what you expect, but 0,19 Km diff is 1,3% and there is probably no way we will see better distance performance from the hardware we have today...

I agree with you, I'm not saying that the GPS is not accurate I just say that it's always ans always and always shorter distances and never longer distances. It's the proof that it is a algorithm problem it's too agressive. And like RISBAC have already said in an another thread it will be fine that Garmin give us the possibility to choose an another GPS calculation mode for the trailer so we can have consistent distances when running in difficult conditions.

A "normal mode" when running in open spaces and a "trail mode" when running under trees with many turns.

  • From my experience both in city & moutains / nature, I think that :

    • in easy conditions, Garmin calculation is fine
    • in very difficult city conditions with a quite "fast" running pace, Garmin calculation is fine (it's shorter yes, but the GPS distance is often wrong and too long)
    • in average conditions, like in a forest, with a lot of changes of pace (including some walking) and plenty of turns, Garmin fix is cutting the distance too much.

That's my personal experience. If I had at least an option "Improve the distance" available at the beginning of the run, I would turn it on/off according to where I am. But I don't expect Garmin to offer that, we are probably not many too complain about it.

  • I am on GPS 4.31 and I am seeing far better GPS tracks than before.

  • That was also my experience with the fenix 6 pro. The current "correction" simply kills the watch for me. My FR235 does a much better job.

Does anyone know if other current gen watches from garmin have the same problems with distance calculation? Especially FR245 and 945 would be interesting because garmin offered me to choose between a refund and a replacement.
