What is "Routing Settings" for all activities.

What is "Routing Settings" for all activities since the creation of a loop route is only for running and cycling ?

For example in trail I cannot do a ball route but I can configure the parameters for a route like Calculation Method

Sorry i am not english i speak of :

Creating a Round-Trip Course and Routing Settings in the manual http://static.garmin.com/pumac/fenix_6_6S_6X_Pro_OM_EN-US.pdf

Thank you for your answers after maybe Garmin has put this in place and for the moment it is useless it is also possible :)

  • That's interesting, I never noticed that before. Indeed, you can only find "Round Trip Course" in the Navigate menu for the Run and Bike activities. All other activities are missing that option. Most notably, it is missing from the Walk activity, which seems strange to me.

I don't know why that is, but there must be a reason for it. Maybe Garmin assumes that Run and Bike are the only activities people do on the road? That's why I think the feature should also be added to the Walk activity, since that's just as often done on roads as Running or Biking.

What I do know is the Round Trip Course feature only works with routable roads and trails, it cannot calculate off-road/off-trail courses. So this is likely why Garmin decided to exclude it from the other activities that are less-commonly done on routable roads/trails. I don't think I agree with that decision, but that appears to be the decision that was made, regardless.

You also ask why all activities (beyond just Walk and Bike) have other routing options, if they don't have the round-trip course option. I don't know why that is. It doesn't really make sense, because they both require routable roads/trails in order to work correctly.

  • You could always copy the Run or Bike activity and then customize it to make a new activity called "hiking", for example, and I think it would then have the Round Trip Course option. But the downside is that both the Run and Bike activities impact your VO2 Max data, so if you used a copy of the Run activity to do something other than running, it might mess with your VO2 Max. Unfortunately, even Trail Run doesn't have the Round Trip Course option.

You can also use the Connect web or mobile app to create a round trip course, and then load it into your activity. Should work just as well, the only downside being you can't create the course from your watch.

  • I just understood that it is useful if one makes navigation towards a point.

  • Well, the Walk activity, for example, is able to calculate a course to a point, using the routable roads and trails (not just a straight line). So I don't know why it isn't also capable of calculating a Round Trip loop, while Run and Bike can.

Could just be something they never got around to implementing into the software? I'd suggest shooting the Garmin Ideas Submission team an email and see if they can add it

  • Just added this suggestion for Garmin (using Idea link above):

"I often setup course points for key locations on a course. In an event this might be aid stations or top of hill and care how much time, distance, elevation gain until I reach that course pt. The problem is the "next waypoint" data field on the Edge 830 and Enduro shows the next turn-by-turn pt and there's no way to show time/distance/elevation to next course pt and name of next course pt. Coming from Suunto this worked well."
