I can’t decide between the 6 Sapphire vs 6X Sapphire.

I’m male / My wrist is 17 cm and I will mostly use it for daily running with about one 3-4 day hike each month — the latter is the reason I’m going with Fenix but this will be an every day driver. Obviously with COVID I can’t go to a store and try them on. Any advice?

  • I highly recommend you go with either the 6 Pro with Gorilla Glass or 6x Pro with Gorilla Glass - NOT sapphire.  Size is up to your personal preference, but the 6x Pro has a bigger battery, so longer battery life.

You will find the Gorilla Glass display much clearer and brighter than the sapphire.

  • I debated this too and went with the 6 pro. I,ll just say, maps arent that big a deal since I have a 830 for the bike. But I have used them running on the 6 pro and they are fine. The battery lasts about 5 days with running and music and it's not so big, that it bothers me. Fits under dress shirt and is comfortable. It also looks really nice, got the titanium one. I'm also 6'3 and 235, so I could have gotten away with the bigger watch, but dont think I need it at all.

Is the titanium just the casing or also the straps? Do you find you can use the maps on the normal 6 even if it’s slightly smaller?

  • I have a 6pro sapphire/Ti. My decision on size was driven entirely by my wrist size. I found some guidance somewhere on the web about watch size and wrist size.

I went with Ti, because I wanted the lightest option possible when running - and I also liked the aesthetics if I am honest. I think the strap is Ti too. The SKU I bought came with an orange silicone strap which is what I use when actually doing an activity, as it secures the watch to your wrist better.

I went with sapphire because while Gorilla Glass is hard, it just isn't as hard (therefore scratch resistant) as sapphire. I haven't noticed that the the display is dark - but then I have nothing to compare it to.

Very happy with my choices. 6 months into ownership still looks pretty sharp. Ti does scratch up - but you could polish out if you were really fussed about it

  • I have 6X Sapphire. My wrist is 17 cm, I'm 191 cm and 92 kg, I would go for 6X again due to screen size(readability) and battery life.

  • Yes it's bezel, bottom and straps.  The middle of the case on all of them is some sort of plastic.  The maps are fine for me, it's not a car 10 inch gps, but what do you expect on your wrist. the screen difference is really only .1 of an inch diagonal.  You go on 3-4 day hikes which could be a reason for the longer battery life, but  mine lasts around 9 days in smartwatch mode. The 5 days is with 4-6 hours of gps with music playing over bluetooth.  I understand people liking the big screen also and longer battery life and am not discouraging that, just want to give you an opinion from the other side.

  • Here's a pic on my wrist with the maps page open

  • Coming from 5X and 5X plus and going through Instinct, my choice has been Fenix 6 Titanium Sapphire with the titanium band.
    Got it since august.
    Looks like new.
I use the maps a lot and the 6 is already much better than my previous 5X and 5XPlus.

The best display for maps would certainly be a Fenix 6X Gorilla as Gorilla glass got less less reflection.
If it is as good as the Instinct display it should be stunning. :-)

Here is mine mounted on leather:

I've got the 6X sapphire. Extra size and battery is nice. I use the maps for navigation during runs, every extra mm counts for middle-aged eyes. There is a lot of talk about the Gorilla Glass being easier to read. Technically this is true but in actual real world use the difference is minuscule. Particularly during outside activities which is what this watch is designed around. No regrets here.

    100% agree.
