Sleep saga continues, not good Garmin

This has been posted before, also by me and this is still an issue. It's even worse than ever! I'm getting detailed sleep and movement readings while NOT WEARING the watch.

I know some people (will) say (again)  I should ignore it, or set sleep time to 1 minute. Did that, 00:00 - 00:01

However, Garmin somehow figured out a way to let their hardware/software measure my sleep while I'm sleeping, NOT wearing the watch, which is lying about 2 meters away from my bed OR it is a bug. I'm pretty sure this cannot be a feature as features are intended functions.

Check the pic for the readings.

Fyi: during these readings I took the watch off at around 11 and put it on around 9.

Why I'm concerned about this? I'm pretty sure sleep measured sleep data is used to create a health picture of you.

Will contact Garmin about this.

  • The part I find most interesting is that it actually analyzed different stages of sleep.  I wear my watch 24/7 so I get the sleep data and the awake parts generally correlate correctly with when I have been up in the middle of the night for some reason, but it makes me seriously question the accuracy of the other stages.  Thankfully for me, I don't really care, but if I did I would be concerned.

Out of curiosity, I assume the watch is with the sensor facing down.  Is the table that the watch is on shiny or matte finish?  Can you see the green LEDs flashing?

When I take my watch off and put it on my desk, the LEDs turn off which tells me the watch knows it is not on my wrist.  I haven't tried to leave it overnight and see if it gives me sleep data, however.

  • I took mine off last night just for a break, No sleep recorded with watch lying face up on a wooden surface: F6 Pro Sapph

And just for completeness this was Monday Night:

  • Watch is alway face down on a non reflective surface. Tonight it was lying on the same spot it alway is, a hard black rubber mat, next to my phone which is switched off at night but on the charger. a

It did not measure anything this time. Sometimes it does, sometimes it does not...

This is a serious bug if you ask me. Didn't get around contacting Garmin but will do now, this minute!

It is exactly the same for me (6 Pro). No readings when I take it off. When I wear it I get quite accurate readings in terms of sleep and wake-up time.

If you're concerned then why don't you wear it to bed in the first place? I'm pretty sure they designed it to be worn and not to be placed on a table... There are literally a billion other scenarios that they couldn't plan for so why don't you do some of the things they are made to do instead?

  • Like others, when I take it off, no readings.  I usually sleep 9-5 (I start work early). I have sleep set 7p-7a.  It always detects sleep start and stop BASED ON MOVEMENT correctly.  When we sit up in bed watching TV from 9-9:30, then lights out, it starts sleep at 9:30 like it should.

I have also worn Apple Watch with Autosleep on other arm a couple times and AW and Garmin are VERY close, including HR readings, deep and REM sleep, etc. I just wear Garmin now (I have F6, F6X, VA4, and Delta) because I want Pulse Ox.  With my snoring and my wife telling me how my night was I find sleep stats AND Pulse Ox to be anecdotally accurate.

  • It intrigues me why people take those defensive attitudes. Why would he only do things the way they are designed to be done ? We wouldn't be having this conversation, we wouldn't question the accuracy and maybe we would simply believe it's always correct, also potentially a bug wouldn't be found. It's thanks to people hacking things and questioning things that progress is often made. I'm thankful that some people don't do things the way they are meant to be done.

  • Why would he only do things the way they are designed to be done ?

That's an interesting observation. Any chance you would clarify that? Surely a bug isn't a bug if the instrument (and this can be anything in this scenario) is not being used the way it is intended to be used?

  • This is not about sleep tracking accuracy. Have tried that out for a while and I find it to be pretty accurate.

I have been trying out multiple things and if I look at my sleep history over a long period it sometimes measures sleep, sometimes sleep types, sometimes movement in sleep (but never steps). The watch is always at the exact same place on a hard rubber (mouse) mat that is non-reflective. In fact the sensors go off after a few seconds and don't come on until I pick it up again the next morning (although I don't know if they come on at night but I think they do not never noticed anything when I weak up to pee. I have tried both, watchface up and down but there are ocassional readings with the one I posted being the worst (or best...)

  • That's is not helpful answer. Why would I wear my watch at night if I don't want to? How would a watch be designed to wear at night. Maybe you can point out where garmin makes it clear that this watch MUST be worn at night. Please.
